Academic Integrity Statements for Syllabi

As you are probably aware, it is a University expectation that all faculty include a statement on their syllabi regarding academic integrity. In an attempt to make that task easier for faculty, we have provided an example statement written by staff in the Office of Student Conduct as well as several example statements written by faculty members across NC State's campus. If you have a statement that you believe would be helpful to other faculty members or you need assistance in writing a statement, please contact the Office of Student Conduct and we would be happy to assist you.

When writing a statement outlining your expectations regarding academic integrity for your syllabus, you might want to include the following components:

1. Yours and/or the University's general philosophy about academic integrity and how it affects the community.

2. Information about how to find the University policies on academic integrity(i.e.: Student Conduct website).

3. Highlight any policies that are specific to your class assignments. For example, the expectation of individual work on homework assignments, requirements involving the use of specific sources for information, etc.

4. How you intend to handle violations.

We have included an example statement that includes the elements listed above. A large portion of this statement was taken directly from the Code of Student Conduct. Please feel free to use all or any portion of this statement in your syllabi.

Example Statement

"Academic Integrity: The free exchange of ideas depends on the participants' trust that they will be given credit for their work. Everyone in an academic community must be responsible for acknowledging, using the methods accepted by the various academic disciplines, their use of others' words and ideas. Since intellectual workers' words and ideas constitute a kind of property, plagiarism is like theft.

Furthermore, as a reader you may want to follow other writers' paths of research in order to make your own judgments about their evidence and arguments. You will depend on those writers' accuracy and honesty in reporting their sources. In turn, your readers will depend on yours.

The free exchange of ideas also depends on the participants' trust that others' work is their own and that it was done and is being reported honestly. Intellectual progress in all the disciplines demands the truthfulness of all participants. Plagiarism and cheating are attacks on the very foundation of academic life, and cannot be tolerated within universities. [Section eight (8)] of the Code (http://www2.ncsu.edu/prr/student_services/student_conduct/POL445.00.1.htm) defines academic dishonesty and provides information on potential sanctions for violators of academic integrity." (NCSU Code of Student Conduct, pg. 3)

Academic Dishonesty: "Academic dishonesty is the giving, taking, or presenting of information or material by a student that unethically or fraudulently aids oneself or another on any work which is to be considered in the determination of a grade or the completion of academic requirements or the enhancement of that student's record or academic career." (NCSU Code of Student Conduct, pg. 3)A more detailed list of the University policies pertaining to academic integrity can be found on the Student Conduct website or in the Code of Student Conduct.

"The act of submitting work for evaluation or to meet a requirement is regarded as assurance that the work is the result of your own thought and study, produced without assistance, and stated in your own words, except as quotation marks, references, or footnotes acknowledging the use of other sources. The submission of work used previously must first be approved by [me] prior to submission." (NCSU Code of Student Conduct, pg. 3)

If you have questions regarding any matter relating to the standards of academic integrity in this course or on a given assignment, you should talk with the me prior to doing any work.

Specific Requirements for this Course:

Labs are to be done in pairs but lab reports are to be done independently. You are not to work together to write up lab reports!

All homework assignments are to be completed independently.

All articles that are used in article reviews must come from the Wall Street Journal. If you use an article that came from another source you will be in violation of the academic integrity policies.

If a violation occurs:

If you are aware of another student in the class violating the academic integrity policies, please notify me immediately.

Once a violation has occurred, I will pursue the case through procedures outlined by the University. For more information about the procedures, see the Student Conduct (http://www.ncsu.edu/student_conduct/) web page. The sanctions that I will recommend will be based on the circumstances of the case. Possible sanctions include F on the assignment, F in the course, or an attendance at a judicial board for consideration of suspension.

In addition to the above example statement, we have provided examples of academic integrity statements used by faculty members at NC State.

Bullet Scott Despain, Foreign language: "HONOR CODE: You and the instructor will follow both the spirit and letter of the NCSU Honor Code (http://www2.ncsu.edu/prr/student_services/student_conduct/POL445.00.1.htm). You will have the opportunity to attest to this in writing upon several occasions. Although you must complete and turn in your own work, you are encouraged to work with others in completing and preparing the above assignments outside of class, as well as some activities during class time (quizzes and tests being the principal exceptions). However, the copying or sharing of answers in or out of the classroom, from another student or from an answer key, etc., is not WORKING together and is in violation of the honor code."

Bullet Sam Mozley, ZO 402: "Academic Integrity: Evidence of cheating on exams, or of directly copying or simply paraphrasing someone else's homework as your own will automatically result a grade of 0 on that item, and additional penalties may be applied. See "Academic Integrity" section of the "Code of Student Conduct" in the Web page: http://www2.ncsu.edu/prr/student_services/student_conduct/POL445.00.1.htm"

Bullet Jennifer Bell, Communications: "Academic Integrity. Strict standards of academic honesty will be enforced according to the University policy on academic integrity. I expect that student’s signature on any test or assignment means that you have neither given nor received unauthorized aid. Consult the following website for further details: http://www2.ncsu.edu/prr/student_services/student_conduct/POL445.00.1.htm"

Bullet Justine Hollingshead, ECD 220: "· Academic Integrity: Any cheating and/or plagiarizing will result in automatic lowering of the course grade and referral to the Office of Student Conduct. The instructors have the option of giving a failing class grade. It is the expectation of the instructors that all work, either paper and/or exams, will be the work of the individual student and not others. For more information on the Academic Integrity statement you can refer to the University Code of Student Conduct. · If you have a documented disability and wish to discuss academic accommodation, please contact us as soon as possible. · Honor Pledge: It is an expectation that a student neither gave, nor received unauthorized aid on any test or assignment. This class adheres to the NC STATE University honor pledge which states; "I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this test or assignment." You may be asked to document this on any paper or exam."

Bullet Dana Lasher: CSC236 Rules Relating To Academic Integrity:

Do not plagiarize another student's work. If you have extenuating circumstances, such as serious personal problems, contact the instructor to make alternative arrangements. The minimum penalty for any cheating incident is a zero on the assignment and a deduction of 10 points (1 full letter grade) from the course grade. The same penalty applies for the person that provided the plagiarized code or homework. Any intentional attempt at circumventing the automated grading process will also be considered an academic integrity violation. All incidents are reported to the Office of Student Conduct.

This course has three different environments for assignments. The default environment is that homework and programs are individual assignments and your actions must adhere to the rules for individual assignments.

Certain assignments may be designated as consultation assignments or team assignments in which case you may optionally follow the rules for that type of assignment. The CSC236 Calendar lists the designations for the current term.

Individual assignments: You must work completely alone on these assignments, except for help from the TA or instructor. Do not discuss the assignment with anyone. Do not work with anyone else on program design or coding. Do not give or take ideas on how to solve the problem; clever ideas and a good design lead to higher grades on the programs and those higher grades are only due the person who thought up the design ideas. Do not jointly write any assembler instructions. Do not give or receive any actual assembler code. Do not give or receive program listings. All instructions you submit, must have been designed, developed and written yourself.

Consultation assignments: You may select one other person with whom you may consult (seek advice) during program development. This includes discussing design ideas on how to solve the problem and giving and receiving debugging help. Enter the name of your consultant in the program header. You may not jointly write any assembler instructions, give or receive any actual assembler code, give or receive program listings. All instructions you submit, must have been written yourself.

Team assignments: You may select one other person to form a team. A two-person team is treated as a single unit. You may freely communicate within the team and share ideas and code. The names of both team members must appear in the owner field of the program header. Create a single answer file that is submitted by both members of the team to their respective submit lockers. Communication outside the team is not permitted and is subject to the same restrictions as individual assignments. After you complete this class, do not give your programs to another student. We periodically reuse programs and you are responsible if someone submits your program in a later term.

Bullet The website for Agriculture and Extension Education has course syllabi that include academic integrity statements available for viewing. Please consult this site for additional academic integrity statements used by NC State faculty.
