Adjudication Process

Academic Misconduct

Academic Integrity policies include cheating, plagiarizing, aiding and abetting others to cheat and falsifying academic records. Most cases of academic dishonesty are handled by the faculty member for the course. In these cases the student signs off on a form admitting guilt and accepts the sanctions outlined by the faculty member. The form is sent to the Office of Student Conduct where it is kept for five years. More detailed information about this process is available by accessing the Academic Integrity page.

Academic misconduct cases are brought before the Academic Integrity Review Board for one of four reasons: the student pleads not guilty to the charges, the student has a prior academic misconduct violation, the incident is severe enough if proven to warrant suspension or expulsion, or the faculty member requests that the Board hear the case to consider suspension or expulsion.

Please refer to this flow chart [PDF] for additional clarity.

Non-Academic Misconduct

Non-academic misconduct includes alcohol violations, drug violations, vandalism, infliction or threat of bodily harm, sexual misconduct, harassment, etc. These cases are either reported through University Housing on an Administrative Memo or through Public Safety on a Campus Appearance Ticket (CAT), These cases are resolved either through
University Housing procedures, by the Office of Student Conduct, or by the Student/Faculty Hearing Board.

When a student receives a CAT, staff members in the Office of Student Conduct determine the adjudication setting. If the case is serious enough to warrant suspension or expulsion, it is referred to the Student/Faculty Hearing Board. If a case would not warrant suspension or expulsion, then it is heard in the Office of Student Conduct in a Disciplinary Conference, or it is referred back to University Housing for resolution. Disciplinary Conferences are informal in nature and can not result in suspension or expulsion from the University.
