Currently, there is no test available
that allows you to answer a bunch of questions and be told definitively
that you should pursue a specific career, such as a marine biologist
or an engineer. Career assessment instruments do, however, allow
you to explore your individual interests (e.g. Stong Interest
Inventory), personality characteristics (e.g. Myers-Brigs Type
Indicator), and work related values (e.g. System of Integrated
Guidance Information - SIGI Plus). Based on this information,
career assessments can then suggest types of jobs or job families
that other people with similar characteristics have found satisfying.
Meeting with a counselor for career exploration can
help you plan and organize your major and career decisions.
A counselor
can listen to your situation, respond to your ideas, give you
feedback, teach you strategies for making decisions, and help
you formulate your major and career goals.
You will likely meet for a few 50-minute sessions with a counselor,
there may be assessments conducted, counseling will focus on
difficulties with decision making, self-confidence, conflicts
in values or with significant others, fears, strategies for
moving forward, etc. This is designed to provide more intensive
assistance to those who are having significant difficulties
with career or major related concerns and may have already
tried other resources previously |
