Program Evaluation

At this time, the Division of Student Affairs does not have a formal program evaluation process. Many units participate in the CAS process through ACPA and other professional standards programs.

Relationship Between Program Evaluation and Outcomes Assessment

Common Question: Where do items such as budget, staffing, space and technology fit in the assessment process?  Can I have outcomes associated with these areas?

Program Evaluation looks at the functioning of the entire unit.  An example outline of standards from CAS (http://www.cas.edu/):

  1. Mission
  2. Program
  3. Leadership
  4. Organization and Management
  5. Human Resources
  6. Facilities, Technology and Equipment
  7. Legal Responsibilities
  8. Equity and Access
  9. Campus and External Relations
  10. Diversity
  11. Ethics
  12. Assessment and Evaluation

Outcomes Assessment is measuring the impact of your program (II).  Outcomes should reflect the purpose of your unit in the form of statements that reflect the end result of your efforts: what are your constituents able to do or know?

The Connection: The program standards found in some program evaluation processes may indicate what content should be taught but not if it was actually learned.

Examples:

Common topic: Staff development/training is important to all of us but not likely part of the purpose of your unit. You will find standards regarding staff development in CAS.
