Who is Eligible?

Must be a Citizen or National of the United States, permanent resident of the United States, or, is in the United States for other than temporary purposes and provides evidence from the Immigration and Naturalization Service of his/her intent to become a permanent resident; · A potential first-generation college student, or low income student mandated by the Department of Education (2/3); or · Has a need for academic support, as determined by ETS in order to pursue successfully a program of education beyond high school (1/3)

 

 

 

 

What is TRIO?

In support of the US Department of Education commitment to equal education access, Congress established a series of programs to help Americans enter college, graduate and move on to participate more fully in America's economic and social life. These Programs are funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and are referred to as the TRIO Programs (initially just three programs). While student financial aid programs help students overcome financial barriers to higher education, TRIO programs help students overcome class, social and cultural barriers to higher education.

 

 

 

 

 

 

What is Educational Talent Search?

Educational Talent Search is a federally funded program of the US Department of Education, is sponsored locally by North Carolina State University, and is part of the Council for Opportunity in Education TRIO Programs.

 

 

What about Transportation?

ETS has partnered with the individual county public schools to provide transportation where activities are outside the county area. Designated departure and return areas at those sites are on each bus schedule.

 

 

What about Scheduled Events?

A Calendar of Events will be mailed out to parents and students in August/September prior to the first workshop. A schedule of events can also be found on our website. Bus schedules are mailed out prior to the event and will be posted on the website, as well as in the guidance office at your school.

Why is my financial information needed?

ETS, being a federally funded program, is required for statistical purposes (such as continued program funding), and to ensure that all Department of Education regulations are being followed. Your name and information are sealed and never made public.

 

Where are the activities held and how often?

In county activities are held at designated schools. Activities are also held at NC State University, or outside the general areas for activities such as, (college visits, cultural trips, industrial tours etc.) At least one activity is scheduled per month.

 

 

How long are the workshops?

Half Day workshops generally run from 9:00 a.m. -12:30 p.m., Full Day workshops generally run from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Full Day workshops will include lunch. All Day workshops, which generally involve distance travel (college, museum visits, etc.), depending on departure and arrival times, breakfast, lunch and dinner may be provided.

 

Do I have to reapply each year?

No. Upon your acceptance into the program, you will remain with the program until after your high school graduation, or you leave the service area, or you voluntarily decide to leave the program. You will be asked to complete a Student Information Summary form each semester to update any information that has changed, such as (school transfer, change in permanent address, services requested, and change in medical data).
