Student Health Center : Health Services: Physical Therapy: FAQs

FAQs: Physical Therapy

How do I make an appointment with a Physical Therapist?
A prescription or referral to physical therapy is required prior to treatment.  A prescription can be obtained from a physician at the Student Health Center, your private physician, or a specialist in the community.  The Physical Therapy Department can coordinate this prescription or referral if necessary.

Do you accept insurance?
If you have the student medical insurance plan, physical therapy will be covered 100%. If you have an outside insurance plan, the insurance company will reimburse you based on their out-of-network plan.  You must file the insurance yourself -  we will print out an itemized statement that you mail to the insurance company.  The charge will go to your student account.

How much will it cost to attend physical therapy?
Charges vary per service and can be discussed prior to treatment.  We take extra effort to maintain reasonable prices for our students.

What can I expect at my first visit?
The physical therapist will review your information and ask questions regarding the problem or injury.  Next, there will be an examination of the problem area to assess mobility, strength, flexibility, pain, and other special tests to determine what factors are contributing to the problem.  We will review these findings with you and develop a personalized treatment plan.

You will receive treatment at the first visit, as well as a program that you can perform at home.  Frequency of treatment varies and will be discussed at the conclusion of the initial evaluation.

At each subsequent visit, the physical therapist will provide treatment, discuss progress, and provide direction for continued improvement.  When you have improved and made sufficient progress, the physical therapist will discharge you from care and inform your doctor of the progress.

Does Physical Therapy only see sports injuries?
No.  We see a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions - acute, chronic, or post-surgical. For instance, sprains, strains, fractures, posture related problems, joint dysfunction, repetitive stress problems, and nerve problems.  Pain may or may not exist.  We commonly see conditions related to low back or neck, shoulder, knee, ankle, elbow, hand, and jaw but treat all body parts.
