FAQ Exams

At what age should the annual pelvic examination and Pap smear begin?
An initial pelvic examination and Pap smear for routine screening is recommended at age 15 or sooner, if:

  • The patient is or plans to become sexually active
  • Periods are irregular, painful or delayed
  • Puberty is delayed or there is failure to begin periods
  • Unusual vaginal discharge
  • Possibility of sexually transmitted disease exposure
  • Possibility of pregnancy
  • Pelvic mass or pelvic or abdominal pain

What can I expect to happen during the Pelvic exam and Pap smear?
1. The provider will review information concerning menstrual periods, sexual and contraceptive history.
2. The patient will completely undress and put on an exam gown or drape and lie down on a special table with stirrups for the feet. First, the thyroid, neck, and breasts are examined and then the external genitalia are carefully examined.
3. A speculum (an instrument that allows visualization of the cervix) is inserted into the vagina. While the speculum is in place, the cervix will be swabbed to obtain cells for the Pap smear and testing for sexually transmitted diseases [Chlamydia or Gonorrhea]. Being relaxed during the exam helps avoid cramping.
4. After the speculum is removed, the examiner places one hand on the lower abdomen and one or two gloved fingers of the other hand into the vagina. The examiner presses on pelvic structures (cervix, uterus, ovaries) to note whether any structure is painful or enlarged.
5. A rectal examination is used to check for hemorrhoids, a rectal mass, blood in the stool, or to confirm a condition of the uterus and ovaries by placing a gloved finger into the rectum.

How do I make an appointment?
Call 515-7762 weekdays.

When in my menstrual cycle should I schedule an appointment?
Pap smears may be scheduled at any time; however, the first week after a period is preferred.

What if I can’t keep the appointment I made?
If you can't keep your appointment, cancel by 4pm the day before your appointment to avoid a $15 no-show charge for the Pap smear and procedures. Punctuality for your appointment is important. If you arrive late for your appointment, you may be asked to reschedule.

How much does a Pap smear and pelvic examination cost?
The cost of the Pap smear is $38.00. When combined with the annual GYN examination, the cost is $73.00. There are additional fees charged for STD tests.

How much time should I allow for the annual examination and Pap smear?
Allow 1 hour.

How do I prepare for the Pap smear examination?

  • To improve accuracy, nothing should be in the vagina for at least 24 hours prior to the Pap smear, including tampons, medications, intercourse, and douches.
  • Arrive 15 minutes before the appointment to fill out papers.
