Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)

INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS
SARS is caused by a virus. Within 10 days of exposure,*symptoms
include:
· fever over 100.4 F
· cough
· difficulty breathing
More serious related conditions include:
· pneumonia
· respiratory distress
· and death
*Exposure is thought to be by contact with respiratory
droplets or by touching something or someone contaminated with infected
droplets and transmitting to eyes, nose, or mouth.

MANY ILLNESSES THAT ARE NOT SARS HAVE SIMILAR
SYMPTOMS
As you go about your business each day as a student or member of
the faculty or staff at NC State, you may notice that someone around
you is ill, or you may become ill. Remember that many illnesses
that are not SARS can present with fever and respiratory symptoms.
The ill individual should contact a health care provider to get
a proper diagnosis. Students may call 515-7107 to make a Student
Health appointment.
