What
Jerry Barker says about Wilderness Travelers...
Wilderness
Travelers started in 1970 with trips into Linville
Gorge Wilderness Area in North Carolina. There have
been trips with 15 year olds from Camp Oak Hill,
church youth group climbs and hikes, NC State
University student expeditions and a variety of
other groups experiencing the great outdoors. The
adventure and experiential learning has taken place
in the mountains of NC, along the Appalachian Trail,
in the Colorado Rockies, the Cascades of Oregon, the
Sierra Nevadas of California, in Utah Canyonlands,
varied ski slopes around the country, and in the Andes of Ecuador and Bolivia. I believe in the
power & beauty of wilderness camping, the
outdoor 'classroom' and God's great creation.
Goals
of our adventure experiences include:
-
To
have time and opportunities for self-discovery
and personal development, stretching personal
boundaries and safely handling the uncertain and
uncomfortable
-
To
experientially nurture group dynamics, teamwork
and leadership
-
To
learn camping and mountaineering skills
-
To
have fun and see other parts of our country
-
To
ensure the survival of an enterprising
curiosity, an undefeatable spirit, tenacity in
pursuit, readiness for sensible self-denial, and
above all, compassion. (Kurt Hahn)
After
participating with NC State students in an NC
Outward Bound program in the Big Cypress and
Thousand Islands area of the Everglades in 1985, I
got the bug to expand adventure based trips for
students in the NC State Fellows leadership
development program. After a 10 day expedition in
1986 to Idaho's City of Rocks and the Grand Teton
National Park in Wyoming (with a successful winter
ascent of the Middle Teton), we began annual trips
in May (listed below) and an occasional August
special trip (including trips to San Juans in
Colorado & Wind River Range in Wyoming.) Small
groups have had expeditions to Mt. Rainier, Mt. Whitney, Wyoming's Wind River Range (Green River Lakes, Gannett Peak & Titcomb Basin, and Cirque of the Towers), Mt.
Hood, the Andes of Ecuador, and on August 16, 2002,
a summit of Bolivia's Mt. Illimani (21,200 feet).
Expeditions
have included:
1989
- Grays Peak, Colorado
1990 - Conundrum Peak, CO
1991 & 1992 - Mt. Belford, CO
1993 - Mt. Columbia, CO
1994, 1996, 2001, 2007- South Sister, Oregon & Mount St. Helens,
WA
1995 - North Cascades & Olympic Peninsular, WA
1997 & 1998 - Sierra Nevadas, CA
1999 - Escalante Canyon, UT
2000 - Black Canyon of the Gunninson & Mt.
Harvard, CO
2002 - Mt. Lamarck, CA (13,417 feet)
2003, 2004, 2006 -Black Canyon of Gunnison and Mt. Yale, CO*
2005-Zion National Park, UT
In
addition to attempting a major snow covered summit,
the groups have done days of rock climbing, mountain
biking, river rafting and snow skiing.
Co-leaders
with Jerry have included David Fountain, Chad Rehder,
Mark Wagoner, Aram Attarian, Todd Wagoner, Shawn Rosenquist, Bengt Carlson, and Rober Horner.
* 2003 was
co-leader Mark Wagoner's last summit before his
tragic death May 28 in a plane crash in Alaska.
Mark, thanks for sharing your skills, joy and
friendship with us.
