The annual Women's Health exam focuses on your overall well being and gives you an opportunity to discuss with your health care provider any questions or concerns you may have about birth control, your monthly periods, or other female health issues.
The Pap test, a cancer screening test used to identify abnormal cells or changes in the cervix, is part of the annual exam, as is the pelvic exam. The purpose of the pelvic exam is to determine the size, shape and position of the uterus and ovaries. Testing for Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) may be done during this exam.
The annual exam begins with completing a health history form online via HealthWeb. If you are sexually active, there will also be questions concerning your sexual history. While some of these questions may seem personal, they are important in determining what kind of testing may be needed.
After your history is reviewed, you will be instructed to undress for your exam and a paper gown will be provided so that you will be covered during the exam.
The physical exam will begin with an evaluation of your lymph nodes, thyroid, lungs, breasts, heart, abdomen, neck and pelvis. You will receive instruction on how to do a monthly breast self-exam.
The final part of the physical exam will be your Pap test and pelvic exam. (To view the Flash movie of the Pap test and pelvic exam, you will need Macromedia Flash Plug-in. To download the free plug-in, click here.) *After viewing the movie, disregard the last screen advising you to make your appointment with UNC Student Health and make it with NCSU Student Health instead, by calling 919-515-7762 or online through HealthWeb.
You will then be instructed to get dressed and meet with the provider to discuss birth control or other needs you may have.
