Abnormal Pap Smears
Your Pap smear test may indicate a disorder of the cervix
that needs additional treatment. If so, the next test to be done
is the Colposcopy. The colposcope is a special
instrument that magnifies the cells of the cervix and allows the
provider to see more clearly the changes in these cells. Very small
samples of these tissues-- called biopsies-- are taken and sent
to the lab for examination and diagnosis.
You will be asked to schedule frequent Pap smear tests
after abnormal results and after any procedure for an abnormal Pap
test. When the provider meets with you to discuss the abnormal Pap
test results, she will discuss the recommended treatment plan options
in detail. We will not perform these procedures if you are pregnant.
Options for Treatment
Cryotherapy is a method for
freezing abnormal cells on the cervix with a special instrument.
These frozen cells will slough off and be replaced with new healthy
cells.
LEEP (Loop Electrosurgical
Excision Procedure) is a method of removing abnormal cervical cells.
This tissue is sent to the laboratory for analysis. The advantages
of this procedure are reduced operating time, decreased pain and
virtually scar-free healing of the cervix. This procedure is best
scheduled after your menstrual period to allow healing before the
next period.
