Employment

"To Work or not to Work?" is a frequent question on the minds of students. Should you decide that you need or would like to work while attending NC State, here are some options to consider.

On-campus opportunities

Working on campus has many benefits. Not only are the job sites usually very convenient and easy to get to from class, most on-campus jobs are flexible with class schedules and other academic commitments. You may also find that you can study while on the job. Additionally, working part-time can help structure your schedule and help you learn good time management skills. Plus, you will gain valuable on-the-job experience and skills that may help you in future job-searches. Research shows that students who work on-campus do better academically than students who work off-campus and even students who do not work at all.

Most departments and offices on campus employ students for a variety of responsibilities ranging from clerical support to web site design. If there is a specific office or program you are interested in, the best way to inquire about work is to go directly to the office and let the director or office manager know you are available for employment. If you do not have anything specific in mind, here are a few suggestions where you can learn of available opportunities:

Other opportunities

Many students choose to work off-campus at local business establishments. Whether you are looking for employment off-campus or on-campus, here are a few resources that may be helpful:

If you plan to work on campus or in the community, you will need to bring with you one of two forms of identification for the federal I9 form--usually a valid driver's license and social security card, or a valid passport. You cannot start work anywhere without these. Please refer to the NC State Human Resources website for more information.
