Now beginning its third year, NC State University's Summer START program is designed to assist new freshmen with the transition from high school to college. Through five weeks of academic and social programming, students will take up to 8 credit hours toward their major while they become acclimated to life at NC State, understand what support programs are available and develop important academic skills that will help them succeed in college and in life.

The 2012 Summer START program includes courses and activities for both Domestic and International Students.

Summer START gives you the opportunity to live in a residence hall while attending second summer session courses. Evening and weekend programs are available to help you develop academic and social skills such as:

  • communication skills
  • study skills
  • critical thinking skills
  • time management skills (demands of college)
  • social skills (adjustment to college; creating networks with other students, faculty, and staff)
  • knowledge of campus and student resources
  • knowledge of the local environment (adjust to Raleigh, NC)
  • knowledge and appreciation of other cultures
