In August 2009, the Campus Environmental Sustainability Team (CEST) became an official Administrative Advisory Council of NC State.

Through one of several Working Groups, CEST's structure allows participation in the decision-making process by anyone on campus.

CEST Goals

In the coming academic year CEST will be creating two tools:

1. A campus sustainability strategic plan
2. A Climate Action Plan, creating strategies for reducing campus' greenhouse gas emissions

CEST will additionally be involved in implementing the tools above as well as providing monitoring, communication and accountability for adherence to sustainability plans and related commitments.

How You Can Participate

Although members are appointed, CEST is structured in a way that any person can contribute and participate in the decision-making through CEST's Working Groups. The Working Groups are formed around the focus areas established in the 2006 Campus Environmental Sustainability Assessment:

  • Academics and Research
  • Buildings
  • Energy and Water
  • Land Use
  • Materials and Purchasing
  • Transportation
  • Waste Reduction & Recycling

History

CEST was created in 2003 by Larry Nielsen, then Dean of the College of Natural Resources, to accomplish the goals of the Task Force Report. The report contained the five goals of energy management, recycling, campus restoration, sustainability recognition and green purchasing for campus. Since this time CEST has been a forum for sustainability education and networking.
