Instructional Modules Contest Rules

Description:

Modules have become a prevalent means of instruction in technology education. Like all instructional techniques, modular instruction has some benefits and some detriments. One potential detriment is that most modules are developed and marketed by vendors, which can lead to a "vendor driven curriculum". However, many technology educators had developed self-paced instructional modules well before the term modules became a household term in our profession. Your challenge will be to develop an instructional module from scratch using limited materials and budget, and within a limited amount of time (just like in real life)!

Modules must include the following sections:

· Background information about the topic

· Instructional objectives written in behavioral terms

· Links to the Standards for Technological Literacy

· An activity or "to do" portion

· An evaluation rubric

The following space and utilities will be made available for each module:

· Table-top space measuring 24" deep by 36" long and 48" high and

capable of bearing 75 pounds of load

· A single 120 volt 15 amp electrical outlet

Each team may utilize the following to construct their module:

· Standard hand and portable power tools from the problem solving/transportation tool list

· No more than $20.00 of purchased materials

· A computer and printer

· An outlet strip and ULâ approved extension cord

· A three-panel cardboard or similar backdrop

· Reference materials including textbooks and the Standards for Technological Literacy

· Original copyright free graphics

Procedure:

Each team (up to three individuals) must register at the regional conference at a specified time.

Topics will be distributed on-site at an explanation session. No prior work will be allowed.

The completed module must be submitted for evaluation at the time indicated along with a budget sheet (see attached). Point deductions will be assessed for late entries.

Only the registered contestants are permitted to complete work on the Instructional Module.

The physical display and graphic presentation must conform to all design specifications.

The completed instructional module will be evaluated by a panel of experts according to the categories highlighted above along with other pertinent information detailed in the attached scoring rubric. The decision of the judges is final and not subject to review. All modules must be claimed and dismantled at the conclusion of the contest.

Materials & Equipment:

Any serious safety violation will be grounds for immediate disqualification of the display.
Contest judges, whose decisions will be final, will determine judging penalties for less serious contest violations.

Scoring Rubric:

School: _______________________________________________________________

Team Members: ________________________________________________________

All contest procedures and specifications must be met. Any serious safety violation will be grounds for immediate disqualification of the instructional module. Contest judges, whose decisions will be final, will determine judging penalties for less serious contest violations. Modules must be set up during the time allotted in the conference program and taken down at the designated time. Security will be provided for the instructional module materials during the contest event. A team of three judges will use the following criteria to judge the contest.
