Niche Tourism:
Festivals and Events

While festivals and events have a celebrated history dating back centuries, just twenty years ago, Event Tourism was considered a relatively new term; today, festivals and events are often noted as one of "…the fastest growing segments of tourism in the world…" (Goeldner & Ritchie, 2006, 227). As noted by Goeldner and Richie (2006), "the International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA) estimates that every year there are between fifty thousand and sixty thousand half-day to one-day events and five thousand or more festivals of two days or longer" (228). Festivals and events are not only an important part of the greater tourism industry, but they also play an important role in a community’s local economy as they are increasingly being used to attract residents and tourists alike for their economic, social and environmental benefits.
