Undergraduate Tutorial Center
Request a Tutor by Appointment: Policies and Procedures Summer 2008

Effective 7/17/08 only math tutors are available for Tutoring by Appointment requests.

Be sure to carefully read the policies and procedures outlined below.

UTC Philosophy

In adherence with the Undergraduate Tutorial Center's (UTC) philosophy, peer tutors work towards helping students become independent learners .

  • The student agrees to come to tutorial sessions prepared: having attended class and taken notes , with all necessary books and materials , having attempted homework and read assignments.
  • The tutor is a successful student, not a teacher or expert , will not do the student's work , and is a good resource, but not responsible for the student's final course grade.
Eligibility for Tutoring by Appointment

Students may request tutoring by appointment if they are enrolled in the requested class(es) for credit and have passed prerequisite courses and/or are enrolled in co-requisite courses. Audited courses are not eligible for tutoring by appointment.

Course and Tutor Requests

The UTC accepts requests for most 100-200 level courses and some 300 level introductory courses (e.g., Statistics 311).

  • Requests for a specific tutor will only be considered if there is a record of a prior successful working relationship with the tutor through the UTC.
Weekly Allotment of Hours

Students will be permitted to work with a tutor for up to three hours each week.

Orientations
  • No orientation sessions are held during the summer. Students may inquire about different assistance available in the UTC office. All students may register online for a Weekly Assigned tutor, beginning the first day of each session.
Program Options

Weekly-Assigned (WA) tutoring

  • During the summer, only Weekly Assigned tutoring is available on a limited basis. No sign-up appointments are available.
  • You must commit to meeting each week for at least two hours throughout the semester with the assigned tutor.
  • Students may request a Weekly Assigned tutor for only one course.
  • If and when a tutor becomes available who matches your schedule and course request, you will be notified via email.
Attending Tutoring Sessions

Students are expected to arrive on time, to be prepared for the session, to participate actively, and to stay for the entire prearranged session time.

  • Per their contractual agreement, students are expected to notify the tutor in advance if they cannot make a WA appointment. Students will accrue one no-show for each of the following: failing to notify a tutor by the predetermined time that they will not attend a session, not coming to a session, or arriving more than 5 minutes late to a session more than twice.
Two "no-shows" will result in the loss of the privilege to utilize individual tutoring for the rest of the semester and in conditional approval of use for subsequent semesters.
Other Considerations
  • ALL students are encouraged to discuss their individual needs with their tutors and consider other time commitments when scheduling tutorial sessions.
  • Exploring your learning style can help you understand how you learn best. It may also help you in discussions with your tutor. To discover your learning style, visit: http://www.engr.ncsu.edu/learningstyles/ilsweb.html
  • Data shows that students who benefit most from tutoring relationships stick to a weekly schedule with their tutor, regardless of fluctuations in work load over the course of the semester.
Understanding These Policies
  • Students who violate any of these aforementioned policies and procedures may be denied the privilege of individual tutoring at any point in the semester.

  • Any questions regarding the policies and procedures should be directed to the Undergraduate Tutorial Center at tutorialcenter@ncsu.edu or 515-3163.

Students are encouraged to print out a copy of the UTC's policies and procedures for their records. Any questions regarding the policies and procedures should be directed to the Undergraduate Tutorial Center at tutorialcenter@ncsu.edu or by calling 515-3163.

I have read and agree to adhere to the policies and procedures outlined above and understand that failure to following UTC policies will result in the loss of all individual tutoring services this semester
