Welcome to WSTS Online
WSTS Online allows you to discuss your writing in a real-time, virtual session with a consultant. Using the Google applications already associated with your NCSU e-mail, WSTS Online sessions work similarly to the face-to-face experience. A consultant reads through your paper and has a conversation about your writing. The difference is that in WSTS Online session the conversation takes place through chat. Remember, you can work on any writing project: an assignment for class, scholarship essay, application essay for graduate school, love letter, anything. Here are some tips to help make your online session as productive as possible.
- Review the directions for your session. Reviewing the procedure for the session will ensure that you and your consultant can spend your session time on your writing rather than set up procedures.
- Know what you want to work on with your consultant. (Brainstorming, Organization, Structure, Thesis Development, Transitions.) If you want to work on grammar, formatting, or layout a face-to-face session will be a better fit for you.
- Be prepared to briefly explain the assignment. Understanding the assignment helps your consultant understand your goals for your writing.
- Be prepared to focus only on the session by closing all other programs and distractions. This will help you make the most of your time.
- You can always refer back to your WSTS Online session. Your chat with the consultant will be archived in your NCSU e-mail account. Consequently, when you sit down to make changes to your writing you can re-read your session for guidance.
- Don't worry about fixing your paper while you are doing the session. Make the most of the limited appointment time you have. Making changes to your text takes time, and you might not get to the paragraph you really wanted the consultant to look at with you. Make notes or highlight places you intend to change later.
- Plan to look at 3 - 5 pages of text. If you are working on a longer project, then you will need to plan for multiple sessions. Three to five pages is a guideline. Many sessions work more intensely on a smaller section, giving you the skills you need to apply what you have learned to the rest of your work.
