- Our aim is to improve individual writers and speakers, not individual pieces of writing and speaking. Nearly all suggestions and strategies can be used in future writing and speaking situations.
- We see writing and speaking as a series of choices and encourage visitors to take responsibility for those choices. Therefore, we do not write on or otherwise correct a visitor's paper or speech.
- We view writing and speaking problems as solvable. We offer encouragement and information, to help visitors solve their own problems and become more skilled writers and speakers in the process.
- We teach by identifying patterns of error and manageable points of revision. We help visitors set priorities for each tutorial based on their needs and concerns.
- We help visitors analyze assignments and recognize disciplinary writing and speaking conventions in order that they become more flexible writers and speakers within academia.
- We assist writers by being readers and speakers by being listeners. In doing so, we offer feedback on how an audience makes sense of the choices a writer or speaker has made.
- We do not speculate about the grade a visitor may earn, nor do we discuss previously earned grades. Our program further prohibits critiquing instructors, methods, assignments, personalities, and grading policies.
