In addition to one-on-one tutoring, Writing and Speaking Tutorial Services offers a number of presentations and workshops in the fall and spring semesters to assist participants with a variety of writing and speaking topics, such as revising and editing and delivering presentations. Descriptions are below. This one-hour presentation focuses on the five main concerns of most public speakers: managing nervousness, organizing ideas effectively, delivering with engagement, designing and using PowerPoint, and fielding audience questions. These topics are not only discussed with PowerPoint slides and oral commentary, but also demonstrated with time for questions. Effective Presentations with PowerPoint This brief, 30-minute presentation focuses on the design of presentations with PowerPoint. This presentation stresses using PowerPoint as a tool to enhance content instead of distracting from it. This 30-minute presentation is a good follow-up for "Effective Oral Presentations." Strategies for planning and presenting with more than one person are emphasized. Revising and Editing Strategies This one-hour workshop covers three steps for improving your paper's ideas, flow, and style. Moving from content to organization to individual sentences and words, this workshop moves through the recommended process and strategies for revising and editing written work. Writing Effective Personal Statements This presentation discusses methods for planning, drafting, and revising graduate application personal statements. Improving Interpersonal Communication This interactive, two-hour workshop explores active listening and nonverbal communication in a one-on-one or interpersonal communication context. Participants will discuss obstacles to effective listening, practice identifying nonverbal cues from others, and learn novel ways of responding. This thirty minute presentation is a very brief introduction to the writing process and resources available at NCSU. It is designed for students new to the university. This one-hour presentation discusses effective ways to interview other people. Topics include making the initial contact, preparing questions, avoiding common pitfalls, and closing tips.
