ABOUT DUAP

Universitywide Initiatives

On a Universitywide level, DUAP plays an important role in promoting the following goals of NC State as a national center of learning:

  • Leading the way in learning technology;
  • Emphasizing hands-on education and real world experience;
  • Fostering a global perspective and worldwide understanding of specific disciplines;
  • Promoting diversity in our academic programs and student populations;
  • Creating a sense of civic involvement through service learning; and
  • Fulfilling our land-grant obligations to the people of North Carolina.

We promote these Universitywide goals by offering services that help NC State colleges set priorities and criteria to guide their academic, recruitment, retention and graduation efforts. Our services also promote the role of the library and technology in undergraduate research and curricular development, encourage service-learning as a curricular vehicle for acting on our land-grant mission and advocate effective advising models.

These programs can take a variety of forms, including ad hoc committees, task forces, special seminars and other programs that bring people together and reward excellence with peer recognition. For example, DUAP manages and supports the Undergraduate Research Symposium, the Undergraduate Research Awards, and the UNC System Consortium on Undergraduate Research. We also sponsor various special initiatives related to diversity, technology in the classroom, service learning, advising and curricular improvements, including our Policy Committees and the following support committees:

  • The Advisers' Roundtable, which operates as an informal, central repository for information and concerns related to advising at NC State. It tackles such issues as how to make advising issues a priority, advising in emerging areas such as distance education, working towards a coherent Universitywide advising philosophy and identifying sources for funding advising initiatives. For more information, please contact Erin Robinson at erin_robinson@ncsu.edu.
  • The Teaching, Learning & Technology Roundtable, which brings together faculty, students and staff to talk about the most advantageous and responsible use of technology in teaching and learning. It issues formal recommendations to the campus community on all issues related to learning technologies, including online curricula, faculty training and incentives, intellectual property policies and web policies and practices.
