1. Writing and Speaking: Students will take one four-hour writing course, ENG 101, in their first year to satisfy the freshman component of the General Education Requirements in Writing and Speaking. Students with lower placement scores will take a two-course freshman sequence, ENG 100 and ENG 101, with ENG 100 awarding 4 hours of free elective credit. History I and II: Two-semester requirement includes a course concerned with pre-industrial Western or non-Western societies (HI 207, 208, 209, 215, 216, 263, 264, 270, 275, or 276), and another dealing with the United States, or post-industrial Western societies (HI 205, 210, 221, 222, 233, 251, or 252). History I satisfies the GER for History or Visual and Performing Arts.

Mathematics: One MA course in college-level mathematics on the university GER list, and another MA, Statistics, or LOG course on the university GER list, except GC 320, PHI 250 and MA/LOG 335.

Social Sciences: Four 3-credit courses from 3 different social sciences on the GER list including: anthropology, cultural geography, economics, linguistics, politics and government, psychology, and sociology. (Except for BUS 305, FOR 460 and AFS/PSY 345). Six (6) of these hours fulfill the CHASS requirement in Social Sciences.

Physical Education: All undergraduate students are required to complete a “Health & Fitness” course (PE 101-109), and one additional credit in a physical activity course (PE 101-295).

Natural Sciences (Basic/Elective): Students must receive credit for introductory laboratory courses in two of the following four areas: (1) Physics (PY), (2) Chemistry (CH), (3) Earth Sciences (MEA, FOR, SSC), and (4) Biological Sciences (BO, BIO, ZO). Science, Technology, and Society: One three-credit course that examines the interaction among science, technology and society; or the application of science or technology to the quality of life or the betterment of society. This course will be from the GER STS list, Science and Technology perspectives and may not be drawn from the student’s major department.

Philosophy: A 3-credit course in philosophy on the university approved GER. (Satisfies 3 hr GER requirement in History, Philosophy, or Religion).

Arts and Letters Elective: A 3-credit course in the arts (including dance, design, film, art history, multi-arts, music or theatre), religion, rhetoric, or classics fulfills this requirement. The Major paper in FLG 492 must be written using (1) a word processing program; (2) on-line library references; (3) internet resources. All German Studies majors will submit two copies of their research paper for the FLG 492 senior seminar. One copy of the paper, as well as a faculty report on the student’s oral presentation for the seminar, will be filed in the student’s portfolio. The paper should be representative of the student’s best work. FLG 492 must be taken at NC State.

14. Literature I and II: The six-hour CHASS literature requirement, as well as the three-hour university GER literature requirement is met by FLG 316 (Literature I) and FLG 323 (Literature II).
15. Free Electives: Students must take 30 hours of free electives, including any courses besides MA 101, FL_101, LAT 101, and GRK 101 that have not been used to fulfill other requirements. The 100-level foreign language courses can be used as free electives if they are in languages other than the language the student uses to fulfill the major language requirement. Students are encouraged to elect additional courses from the lists provided in the Departmental Electives and Advised Electives I-II. It is required that all German Studies majors participate in at least one semester of study abroad in a German-speaking country. Please note that no more than 15 hours of transfer credit (from study abroad or from other US institutions) may be applied towards the core courses in German Studies (core: required courses, departmental electives, and advised electives I and II).

Foreign Languages: Completion of FLG 201, or comparable proficiency as demonstrated by examination.
17. Library/Information Literacy: This requirement is satisfied by completion of ENG 101, which introduces students to basic methods of research using print and electronic resources. |
