9. Social Science
Four 3-credit courses from 3 different social sciences on the GER list including: anthropology, cultural geography, economics, linguistics, politics and government, psychology, and sociology. (except for BUS 305, FOR 460 and AFS/PSY 345). Six (6) of these hours fulfill the CHASS requirement in Social Sciences.

10. Basic Sciences (2 different)
Students must receive credit for introductory laboratory courses in two of the following four areas: (1) physics (PY), (2) chemistry (CH), (3) earth sciences (MEA, FOR, SSC), and (4) biological sciences (PB, BIO, ZO). A student may not receive credit for both BIO 105/106 and BIO 181; CH 100 may not be taken for credit if the student has previously received credit for CH 101. BIO 181, CH 101/102, PY 205, and PY 211 each is the first part of a two-semester sequence; students should not take the first part of the sequence unless they intend to complete the sequence.

12. Science, Technology & Society
One 3-credit course from the university GER STS list—Science and Technology perspective. Courses from major field of study may not be used to satisfy this requirement.

13. Mathematics
One MA course in college-level mathematics on the university GER list and another MA, Statistics, or LOG course on the university GER list, except GC 320, PHI 250, MA/LOG 335.

14. Health and Wellness
One of PE 101 through PE 109.

15. Physical Education
A 1 hour physical activity course.

16. Computer Literacy
This requirement is satisfied by the completion of the Required courses category within the major.

17. Library/Information Literacy
This requirement is satisfied by completion of ENG 101, which introduces students to basic methods of research using print and electronic resources.

18. Free Electives
Students in the IS curriculum must take 33 hours of free electives, including any courses besides MA 101, FL 101, LAT 101, and GRK 101 that have not been used to fulfill other requirements. The 100-level foreign-language courses can be used as free electives if they are in languages other than the language the student uses to fulfill the major language requirement (see footnote 21). Since FL_ 202 is a prerequisite for the required FL_ 3xx course, you may have to take it among your free electives, unless you have placed into the FL_ 3xx level.

20. IS Advised Electives
Two courses (6 hours) to complement your studies with the recommendation of your advisor. FL_202 may count as an advised elective.

21. Foreign Language Requirement
Students are required to demonstrate proficiency in at least one foreign language equivalent to the FL_300 level, either through course work, or credit by exam, or taking the placement test and placing out (no credits are awarded if placing out). Opportunities for placing out of FL_ 300 should be discussed with the International Studies Major Advisor.

22. Although some courses are listed in more than one category, no course may satisfy more than one requirement. Students in IS may take no more than four IS courses at the 200 level.

23. Prior to enrolling in a study abroad program students are required to consult with the Director of International Studies in order to ascertain that the courses they plan on taking overseas may be transferred for credit to NC State and may count toward the major requirements and/or the GER.
