1. Required courses for major program in French: C- or better is required in each of these courses. Please consult the NC State Course Catalog for required pre-requisites. The following courses are required (27 credit hours):

2. * Technology Fluency and Communication in the Major are corequisites with FLF 492. The major paper in FLF 492 must be written using (1) a word processing program; (2) on-line library references; (3) internet resources. All French majors will submit two copies of their research paper for the FLF 492 senior seminar. One copy of the paper, as well as a faculty report on the student’s oral presentation for the seminar, will be filed in the student’s portfolio. The paper should be representative of the student’s best work. FLF 492 must be taken at NC State.
3. Departmental Electives: Departmental Electives: Six semester hours. Select two of the following courses. C- or better is required in each of these courses. Please consult the Handbook for Foreign Language Majors for the required prerequisites.

4. Free Electives: Students must take 36 hours of free electives. Students are strongly encouraged to elect either additional FLF departmental electives, FL 216, or HI 414, HI 415, and HI 430. No more than 12 credit hours of free electives may be taken for Credit only (S/U).
5. Oral proficiency in French: French majors are expected to demonstrate oral proficiency French at the ACTFL Intermediate High level or higher by the completion of FLF 492.
6. Study Abroad: French majors are strongly encouraged to participate in a study abroad program. Please note that, no more than 15 hours of study abroad transfer credit may be applied towards the major program in French.
7. History I and II: Two 200-level courses are required in History, one from History I and one from History II.

8. Literature I and II: The six-hour CHASS literature requirement is met by FLF 301 and FLF 302.
9. Philosophy: Any 3-credit course in philosophy on the university approved GEP humanities course list.
10. Arts and Letters Elective: Three credits from one of the following courses is required.
All HA courses; MUS 180, 200, 201, 202, 205, 206, 230, 260, 306, 310, 315, 320, 330, 335, 350, 360; all 200 and above REL courses, ADN 111, 112, 202, 212, 219, 231, 272, 273, 281, 311, 384, 386, 414, or 454, AFS 340 or 375, ARC 140, 141, or 142, ARS 251, 252, 259, 306, 351, or 353, COM 103 203, 213, 233, 243, 303, 321, 323, 333, 340, 364, 374, or 411, DAN 272 or 295, ENG 282, 283, 321, 364, 374, 411, or 492, FL 216, FLS 360, GD 200 or 342, GRK 310, IDS 496, LAR 444, LAT 310. Courses in the major field of study may not be used to fulfill this requirement.
11. Social Sciences: Four 3-credit courses from 3 different social sciences including: ANT, ARE, EC, PS, PSY, SOC. Also ENG 210, GEO 220, IDS 401, or STS 402. Six of the twelve social science credits must be chosen from the GEP Social Sciences list.
12. Foreign Language: Completion of FLF 201 satisfies the FL_201 requirement.
13. Residency requirement: A maximum of 15 hours of transfer credit may be applied toward the major. FLF 492 must be taken at NCSU.
14. GPA Requirement: An overall GPA of 2.00 and a GPA of 2.50 for the major are required.
