An overall 2.0 GPA for all PS courses attempted.

1. Writing and Speaking: Four credit hours with a grade of C- or better in ENG 101.

2. Mathematics: Six credit hours: (1) One MA course in college-level mathematics on the university GER list, except MA 335, and (2) ST 311.

3. History Group I: Three credit hours in pre-industrial or non-Western societies: HI 207, 208, 209, 215, 216, 263, 264, 270, 275, 276.

4. History Group II: Three credit hours in United States or post-industrial societies: HI 205, 210, 221, 222, 233, 251, 252.

5. Social Sciences: Twelve credit hours representing at least THREE of the following disciplines: anthropology, economics, political science, psychology, sociology, cultural geography (GEO 200, 220, 300), IDS 401, and STS 402. One course must be EC 205. At least nine of these hours must be outside of political science. A political science course used to fulfill this requirement may not also be counted towards fulfillment of the 30-hour major; PS 391 & PS 413 may not be used to fulfill this requirement.

6. Physical Education: Two credit hours of activity courses, including one PE course numbered 100 through 109.

7. Foreign Language: Three credit hours. Completion of FL 201 or comparable proficiency as demonstrated by examination. All students must take the placement test administered. 101 and 102 courses in another language do count as free electives. Students who place into FL 202 and complete that course with a C- or better will receive credit for FL 201 as well.

8. Arts and Letters Elective: Three credit hours. Completion of any three-credit course in Music, History of Art, the Multi-Arts (including ARS 251, 252, 259, 306, 351, 353) or Dance (including DAN 272/295) or a course in Film (ENG 282, ENG 492, COM 364, COM 374) or Theatre (COM 103, 203, 213, 233, 303, 323, 333, or 340 (AFS 340)) or Religion (except Hebrew language courses), Rhetoric (COM/ENG 321, 411) or Classics (GRK/LAT 310).

9. Literature Group I: Three credit hours. Literature outside the United States prior to the twentieth century: ENG/FL 221, 222; ENG 251*, 261*, 262*; FLF 301; FLS 301, 303; FLG 316; or FLR 303. (*Students who use ENG 261 or ENG 262 to satisfy this requirement may not also use ENG 251)

10. Literature Group II: Three credit hours. One course taken from the list in Group I, above or a course in American or twentieth century literature (ENG/FL 223, ENG/FL 224; ENG 246, 248, 252, 265, 266; or FLR 304); or an upper division survey course or literature course in period, genre, or major figure in English; a foreign language in English translation; or the original foreign language (ENG 305, 349, 362, 363, 369, 370, 371, 372, 373, 376, 377, 380, 382, 383, 385, 390, 398, 399, 420, 439, 451, 452, 453, 462, 463, 464, 465, 468, 469, 470, 471, 486, 487; ENG/FL 394, 406, 407; FLG 302, 414, 492; FLG 323; FLS 302, 304 323, 403, 404, 492; or GRK 320).

11. Natural Science: Eleven credit hours of natural science, two courses must include a laboratory experience.

  • Hours must include at least two introductory courses from two of four different science fields (biological sciences, chemistry, earth sciences, physics). Students choose from the following: Biological Sciences: BO 200; BIO 105/106, 181, 183; ZO 150, 212; Chemistry: CH 100, 101/102, 201/202; Earth Sciences: MEA 100, 101/110, 102/111, 130/135, 200/210; SSC 200; Physics: PY 123/125, 123/126, 124/125, 124/126, 131, 133, 201, 202, 205, 208, 211, 212.
  • Credit may be received for only one of the following: BIO 105/106, or 181, CH 100 may not be taken for credit if the student has previously received credit for CH 101.

12. Philosophy: Three hours of philosophy, excluding logic courses such as PHI/LOG 201 and 335.

13. Science Technology and Society: Three credit hours. One course from the university GER STS list – Science and Technology perspective. Courses from major field of study may not be used to satisfy this requirement.

14. PS 300-level Elective: Three credit hours. Any 300-level or higher PS course. No grades below “C-“ for any PS courses applied towards the major.

15. PS Concentration Electives: Twelve credit hours: one course at the 200-level or higher; three courses at the 300-level or higher. No grades below “C-“ for any PS courses applied towards the major. Students must select four courses from the following list: PS 202, 301, 303, 308, 313, 314, 320, 331, 336, 401, 406, 408, 418, 437, 471; PA 509, 511.

16. PS Concentration Seminar: Three credit hours. One 400-or 500-level seminar, designated as such in the Schedule of Courses for a given semester. No grades below “C-“ for any PS courses applied towards the major. Students must select courses from the following list: PS 401, 406, 408, 418, 437, 471; PA 509, 511.

17. Advised Electives: Six credit hours. Students must select two courses from the following list: ARE 309; EC (ARE) 336; EC 201, 202, 301, 302, 303, 410; HI 350, 420, 448, 453, 454, 455, 495; IDS 301, 303, 401, 490; PHI 309, 312, 313, 340; PHY 307, 311, 312; SOC 304, 305, 311, 351, 381, 402, 410, 418, 440, 450.

18. Free Electives: Twenty-four credit hours. Electives may be chosen from any university course for which the student qualifies. A maximum of 12 hours may be taken for credit-only (S/U).
