1. Required courses for major program in French: C- or better is required in each of these courses. Please consult the NC State Course Catalog for required pre-requisites. The following courses are required (27 credit hours):

2. * Technology Fluency and Communication in the Major are corequisites with FLF 492. The major paper in FLF 492 must be written using (1) a word processing program; (2) on-line library references; (3) internet resources. All French majors will submit two copies of their research paper for the FLF 492 senior seminar. One copy of the paper, as well as a faculty report on the student’s oral presentation for the seminar, will be filed in the student’s portfolio. The paper should be representative of the student’s best work. FLF 492 must be taken at NC State.
3. Departmental Electives: Departmental Electives: Six semester hours. Select two of the following courses. C- or better is required in each of these courses. Please consult the Handbook for Foreign Language Majors for the required prerequisites.

4. Free Electives: Eighteen hours of free electives outside the required courses in the French Teacher Education Program. Students are encouraged to elect either additional FLF or ECI electives, FL 216, HI 414, 415, 430, ECI 201, 305, 416, minor in Spanish or add on ESL (See #19 below) as free electives; only 12 hours may be take for S/U credit.

5. Oral proficiency in French: French teacher education majors are expected to demonstrate oral proficiency French at the ACTFL Intermediate High level or higher by the completion of FLF 492.  Students must take a computerized oral proficiency exam, at their own expense, prior to the Professional Semester.
6. Study Abroad: French majors are strongly encouraged to participate in a study abroad program. Please note that, no more than 15 hours of study abroad transfer credit may be applied towards the major program in French.
7History I and II: Two 200-level courses are required in History, one from History I and one from History II.

8.  Literature I and II: The six-hour CHASS literature requirement is met by FLF 301 and FLF 302.

9Philosophy: Any 3-credit course in philosophy on the university approved GEP Humanities course list.

10. Arts and Letters Elective: Three credits from one of the following courses is required.
All HA courses; MUS 180, 200, 201, 202, 205, 206, 230, 260, 306, 310, 315, 320, 330, 335, 350, 360; all 200 and above REL courses,  ADN 111, 112, 202, 212, 219, 231, 272, 273, 281, 311, 384, 386, 414, or 454,  AFS 340 or 375, ARC 140, 141, or 142, ARS 251, 252, 259, 306, 351, or 353, COM 103 203, 213, 233, 243, 303, 321, 323, 333, 340, 364, 374, or 411,  DAN 272 or 295, ENG 282, 283, 321, 364, 374, 411, or 492, FL 216, FLG 318, FLS 360, GD 200 or 342, GRK 310, IDS 496, LAR 444, LAT 310. Courses in the major field of study may not be used to fulfill this requirement

11Social Sciences: Two 3-credit courses from the social sciences* including: ANT, ARE, EC, PS, PSY, and SOC. Also ENG 210, GEO 220, IDS 401, or STS 402.  These 6 credits must be chosen from the GEP Social Sciences list.

*Since EDP 304 and PSY 376 are required as part of the major, students should ensure that at least one Social Science is from an area other than EDP and PSY.

12. Foreign Language: Completion of FLF 201 satisfies the FL_201 requirement.

13. Teacher Professional Education Component: The following courses are required for licensure in the Foreign Language Teacher Education program. Students must achieve a final grade above a D+ in ALL of these courses.

(Please note that ED 310 Tutoring Adolescents is NOT required in this curriculum.)

Note: Students must pass the Praxis I exams (Reading, Writing, Mathematics - all in English) no later than the end of December preceding the fall student teaching semester. Students can be exempt from taking the exams if the student's SAT scores were 1100 combined in Math and Critical Reading (or 550 in Math exempts the student from math Praxis I only or 550 in Verbal exempts the student from Reading and Writing Praxis I exams only) or ACT scores were 24.

14. Communication Elective: COM 110 is recommended. Also acceptable: COM 112, 201, 202, 212.
15. ECI 205 must be taken in the sophomore year. A grade of B or better is required in this course. ECI 205, 423, and 424 all require observations/practica in the public schools. Each of these experiences must be at a different level (i.e. K-5, 6-8, 9-12).
16. Before student teaching, students must complete all required courses in the major program except FLF 492.
17.  Residency requirement: A maximum of 15 hours of transfer credit may be applied toward the major. FLF 492 must be taken at NCSU.
18GPA Requirement: An overall GPA of 2.00 and a GPA of 2.50 for the major are required.
19ESL Add-on:  LTF students interested in being able to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) after graduation have the opportunity to add on ESL licensure courses as undergraduates.
