Classification of Instructional
Programs (CIP)
In March 1999, UNC General Administration adopted the US Department
of Education's Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP)
which replaces the "Academic Program Inventory
(API)," the vintage 1972 HEGIS-based system of classification
of academic undergraduate and graduate programs. The CIP provides
a more refined classification of programs, and ensures that existing
and new programs are properly represented for purposes of national recognition.
