GUIDELINES AND INSTRUCTIONS
FOR DEVELOPING OR REVISING UNDERGRADUATE COURSES

The guidelines set forth in I. through VII. (as well as the instructions for preparing course action forms) below have been recommended by the University Courses and Curricula Committee and approved by the Provost for use in the review of undergraduate course proposals. They should normally be followed by academic departments in initiating such proposals and by college curriculum committees and college deans in reviewing and endorsing them. Exceptions should be explicitly justified.

Faculty members should continually evaluate the courses which they teach with a view toward improving them in terms of content and of teaching-learning processes involved. Whenever the improvement of a course leads to significant modification, a formal revision of the course should be proposed. No course should be proposed in the absence of a qualified instructor or dealing with subject matter inappropriate to university credit.

II. Consultation with other departments

III. Duplication of courses and cross-listing courses

IV. Proliferation of courses and experimental offerings under Special Topics numbers
