Revising Curricula for the General Education Program (GEP)

All current curricula are required to be revised including un-matriculated/undeclared degree keys. Current degree keys by College can be viewed at https://packtracks.ncsu.edu/scripts/RegRec/ada_dgtt.pl.

The following documentation is required for revising and submitting curricula for the new GEP.
Click here for the necessary forms, templates and instructions.

  • Completion of the GEP Undergraduate Curriculum Action Form
  • GEP Format B template – List of Degree Requirements
  • GEP Format A template – Semester by Semester (8 semester) Display
  • Current Semester by Semester display available at http://www.ncsu.edu/reg_records/curricula/
  • Consultations as needed

General Guidelines:

Double-counting:

  • One course may fulfill a Major or Minor requirement and also fulfill one or more of the GEP requirements, also known as double-counting. A course may fulfill more than one requirement but the credit hours for the course only count once. A single course may not satisfy two credit-bearing GEP categories. Double-counting of a course can occur between the GEP, the Major and the Minor. Note: A course in the Major/Minor cannot double-count to meet the Additional Breadth requirement.
  • Example 1: EC 205 is required for completion of the Major. EC 205 is listed on the approved list of courses for the GEP Social Sciences category. EC 205 will fulfill a Major requirement and double-count in fulfilling 3 hours of the Social Sciences GEP requirement.
  • Example 2: REL 332 is required in the Major. REL 332 appears on both the GEP Humanities course list and also on the Global Knowledge co-requisite course list.  REL 332 will satisfy the Major requirement and also double-count toward fulfilling 3 hours of the GEP Humanities requirement. In addition, it will also satisfy the Global Knowledge co-requisite which does not carry any credit hours.

Consultations are required if the following occurs:

If course(s) outside of your College are being added to your curriculum as a Major/College requirement or elective, a consult from the Associate Dean of the appropriate College is required, particularly when a significant increase in course enrollment may result.  The appropriate consult must be attached to the curriculum action before the action is submitted to UCCC for approval. See consultation guidelines at
http://www.ncsu.edu/uap/academic-standards/courses/crsguidetail.html#II
.

If course(s) outside of your College are being dropped from your curriculum please send notification to the Associate Dean of the appropriate College and indicate that such notification has been sent by attaching a copy of the email.

Submitting the GEP Curriculum Action

Departments should present the completed action and all attachments to the College Dean’s office liaison for approval at the College level.  The College liaison will forward one hard copy of the completed signed curriculum action form with attachments for each revised curriculum/program to the Office of Undergraduate Courses and Curricula, Campus Box 7105, Flex Lab Building, Module 4. In addition, each 8-semester display (Format A) must also be submitted electronically in Word format to Catherine_Freeman@ncsu.edu.
