North Carolina State University Handbook for Advising and Teaching

APPENDIX J

TITLE IX
CONSTRAINTS ON ACADEMIC AND CAREER COUNSELING

NC State is subject to Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 which prohibits discrimination in federally assisted education programs on the basis of sex. The key provision of Title IX reads:

"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance . . ."
Section 86:36 of HEW Regulations for Implementing Title IX covers counseling activities.

For compliance under Title IX, coordinators of advising and faculty advisers should be careful not to advise students either to enter or avoid a particular course, program, or career because of the student's sex or marital status.

Counseling efforts should not be based upon traditional assumptions of male and female roles in educational programs and careers.

It is not illegal to give students factual information about job opportunities for one sex or the other. This information must, however, be presented in an objective fashion.
