If the student graduated from high school after the spring of 1990, he or she must meet the Minimum Admissions Requirements (MAR) established by The University of North Carolina Board of Governors with respect to high school course preparation. In order to be considered for admission, the student must provide high school transcripts indicating the minimum requirements have been met. The following high school courses are required:
four units in college preparatory English
three units in mathematics, including Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry or a third mathematics for which Algebra II is a prerequisite
two units in social science, including United States history
three units in science, including a physical science, life science, and a laboratory course
Students who graduated from high school before the spring of 1990 and/or students who are 24 years old or older are exempt from MAR.
Beginning Fall 1994, all NC State degree students should take the university foreign language proficiency requirement which includes 2 years of the same language in high school or 2 years of college level language. Students not fulfilling the requirement must take a foreign language on enrollment. (See Placement in Foreign Language)
If the student has not completed any coursework at another college or university and meets the Minimum Admission Requirements, the student is eligible for consideration for regular admission after completing at least 15 credit hours of C- or better college-level work through Lifelong Education. Admission is contingent on space availability at the time the 15 credit hours are completed satisfactorily. Because of the competitive nature of admission at NC State, completion of the 15 hours does not guarantee admission. At least one college-level English composition course and one college-level mathematics course applicable to the desired degree program must be included in the 15 credit hours. Developmental courses such as ENG 110 and MA 101 cannot be counted toward the 15 credit hour requirement.
If a Lifelong Education student does not meet the MAR, the student can be considered for admission only if the student has received an A.A., A.S., or A.F.A. degree or has completed 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in required subject areas at an accredited college or university. The student must complete six semester hours (9 quarter hours) in each of the following subject areas: English, mathematics, science, and social science. In addition, the student must meet all other admission requirements with regard to grade point average. Students may not make up MAR deficiencies at NC State.
If the student has attempted college level work elsewhere, official transcripts from all previous institutions must be received with the application. In order to be considered for admission, the student must have completed a minimum of 30 semester hours (42 quarter hours) of accredited college level work at all institutions (including NC State) or at least 15 semester hours at NC State through Lifelong Education. The student must have a minimum grade point average of 2.0 on all work attempted. However, most degree programs require a grade point average well above a 2.0. At least one college-level English composition course and one college-level mathematics course must be included.
