2-1.7.9 PLACEMENT IN MATHEMATICS

For those incoming freshmen NC State students who will have taken the SAT Math Level 1 or the SAT Math Level 2 Subject Test and/or the NCSU On-line Math Placement Test, the cutoff scores for placement in their first mathematics course are presented below.

Level 1 Subject Test Cutoff Scores

Course

Minimum Score

MA 141

MA 111, 121, 131

540

MA 107

490

MA 103, 105, 114

470

Students making below 470 must take MA 101.

Students making below 430 must take MA 101.

Those students who have taken neither a Subject Test nor an AP Calculus Exam will not be allowed to take any calculus course. Students who took either the AP Calculus Exam or who took a SAT Subject Test too late for the score to reach NC State before their Orientation Session will be temporarily placed in a math course using their on-line test scores. The on-line scores have the same cut-offs as the SAT Level 2. However, if and when their Subject Test or AP Calculus score reaches NC State, and if that score is too low for placement in calculus, the student will need to drop the calculus course and register for an appropriate non-calculus course. Likewise students who have been registered in MA 107, MA 108, or MA 111 before their Subject Test score arrives must adjust their registration to their score. Failure to do this will result in the Department of Mathematics disenrolling the student from the inappropriate course possibly too late for the student to register for any different course. Students without a Subject Test, on-line test, or AP calculus score or transfer credit will be placed in MA 101.

Students with an AP Calculus Exam score of 2 or higher will be allowed to enroll in a first semester calculus course (MA 121, 131, or 141).

Students who have been placed into and who successfully complete the pre-calculus course, MA 107, will be allowed to then take MA 121 or MA 131. However, students placed into MA 107 who are required to take MA 141 will need to make a C- or better in MA 107, and then make a C or better in MA 108 (second semester of pre-calculus) before qualifying for MA 141.

Students cannot qualify for MA 141 by taking MA 121 or MA 131. Those students who are required to take MA 141 but do not qualify for MA 141 will need to either take MA 111 and make a C- or better, or else take MA 107 and MA 108 and make a C- or better in each course. The MA 107-108 sequence is a package deal - students are not allowed to take MA 108 without taking MA 107 or it equivalent first.

For placement a student can choose to use their AB sub-score of the BC calculus exam.

(*) Students who make a 3 on the Calculus AB Exam (or a 2 on the Calculus BC Exam or a 5 on the IB Advanced) are allowed to start in MA 241 but will not receive credit for MA 141 until they make a "C-" or better in MA 241.

(**) Students who make a 3 on the Calculus BC exam are allowed to start MA 242 but will not receive credit for MA 241 until they make a "C-" or better in MA 242.

(***) The standard level scores will be looked at individually by the Mathematics Department.

Students who place into MA 107 will need to follow MA 107 with MA 108  before being allowed to take MA 141.  A "C-" or better is required in both MA 107 and MA 108 to qualify for MA 141.

Students who need MA 121 can get credit for MA 121 with a 3 on Calculus AB by requesting credit from the Mathematics Department.

Students who make a 4 or 5 on the Calculus BC Exam will receive credit for both MA 131 and MA 231.
