North Carolina State University Handbook for Advising and Teaching

5-6.5 SUGGESTED TEACHER AND STUDENT COURTESIES

Promptness: It is important that an instructor begin and end the class on time. Instructors who are tardy to class will find that students will be late as well. Delaying the class past its scheduled termination is discourteous to both one's own students and other classes scheduled the next period in the same room.

Chalkboard erasing: Each instructor should erase the chalkboard at the completion of class, so that the next teacher in the room will not have to do it.

Furniture arrangement: Instructors may wish to move chairs, desks or tables for a particular class. However, the rearrangement may not be one desired by the instructor using the room next. Unless one checks with the next instructor, it is courteous to return the classroom to its original arrangement at the end of your class.

Eating or drinking: If the instructor prefers that students not eat, or drink, or chew gum in class, an announcement of this preference on the first day should forestall the need to reprimand individuals later. If eating or drinking is allowed, be sure that the class disposes of any litter properly.
