College of Humanities and Social SciencesCHASS will automatically accept students who have completed at least 12 hours at NC State with a GPA of 3.0 or better. Students who have met these criteria may enter the College at any time in the year and should proceed to the Dean's Office in Caldwell 106.
The one exception to this rule is the Interdisciplinary Studies major, a self-designed degree program, which requires a formal application process for all students. Students interested in this degree should check the program's website for a description of the application process.
1. Students intending to enter the departments of
Communication, Social Work, Sociology and Anthropology, Political
Science, or Psychology may apply for entrance if they have
completed 12 hours, have GPAs between 2.5-3.0, and have met the specific
departmental requirements elaborated below. Application deadlines are
February 15, June 15, and September 15. Please understand that admission
is competitive and meeting these requirements does not guarantee
admission. Students will be notified within a month as to whether they
have been accepted. 1.1. Communication: Completion of FL201 with a grade of "B-" or better; completion of PHI 221, PHI 250, LOG 201, or ST 311 with a “B-“ or better (transfer credit, AP or IB scores will be considered to satisfy these requirements).
1.2. Sociology and Anthropology: For Sociology and Criminology, students should have completed SOC 202 with a grade of B- or better. For Anthropology, students should have received a grade of B- or better in ANT 251, 252, 253, or 254.
1.3. Political Science: Students should have completed at least 6 hours of PS courses at the 200-level or above with at least a B or better.
1.4. Psychology: Students should have completed PSY 200 with a grade of B- or better and BIO 105/6 or BIO 181 with a grade of C or better.
1.5. Social Work: Students should have completed SW 201 with at least a grade of B- or better and one of the following courses—SW 290, 310, and 312—with a grade of B- or better.
2. Students intending to enter the departments of English, Foreign Languages and Literature, History, or Philosophy may apply for entrance if they have completed 12 hours, have GPAs between 2.0 and 3.0, and have taken into account the specific departmental requirements elaborated below. Application deadlines are February 15, June 15, and September 15. Please understand that admission is competitive and meeting these requirements does not guarantee admission. Students will be notified within a month as to whether they have been accepted.
2.1. English: Students will be reviewed on an individual basis by the department. It is recommended that students with less than thirty hours complete one 200-level English course with a B- or better in that course and that students with more than thirty hours complete two 200-level English courses with a B- or better in those courses.
2.2. History: Students will be reviewed on an individual basis by the department. It is recommended that students with an overall GPA of 2.5 or better complete one history course with a grade of B- or better and that students with a GPA of 2.0 or better complete two history courses with a grade of B- or better.
2.3. Foreign Languages and Literatures: Students will be reviewed on an individual basis by the department. It is recommended that students complete ENG 101 with a grade of C or better and FLS or FLF 201 and 202 with a grade of B- or better.
2.4. Philosophy and Religion: Students will be reviewed on an individual basis by the department. For Philosophy, it is recommended that students complete a philosophy course at the 200-level with a B- or better. For Religious Studies, it is recommended that students complete a religious studies course at the 200-level with a grade of B- or better.
3. Students intending to enter the interdisciplinary majors
of Africana Studies; Arts Applications; International Studies; Science,
Technology and Society; or Women's and Gender Studies may apply
for entrance if they have completed 12 hours, have GPAs between 2.0 and
3.0, and have taken into account the specific requirements elaborated
below. Application deadlines are February 15, June 15, and September 15.
Please understand that admission is competitive and that meeting these

month as to whether they have been accepted. Note that all students must
complete a formal application process for the Interdisciplinary
Studies major. 3.1. Africana Studies: Students will be reviewed on an individual basis by the program. It is recommended that students complete two AFS courses (AFS 240, 241, 342, 343, 344, 345, 346, 442, 490, 491, or 497) with a B- or better.
3.2. Arts Applications: Students will be reviewed on an individual basis by the program. It is recommended that students complete one course in their foundational art area with a B- or better. Occasionally, other information may be requested by the Arts Studies review committee.
3.3. Interdisciplinary Studies: See details above. All students must complete a formal application process. Interested students should check the program's website for details of the process.
3.4. International Studies: Students will be reviewed on an individual basis by the program. It is recommended that students complete IS 393 and their social science general education requirements with a B- or better.
3.5. Science, Technology, and Society: Students will be reviewed on an individual basis by the program. It is recommended that students complete STS 214 with a grade of B- or better.
3.6. Women's and Gender Studies: Students will be reviewed on an individual basis by the program. It is recommended that students complete WGS 200 or 210 with a grade of B- or better.
4. Students intending to matriculate into any one of the six CHASS teaching track degree programs (i.e. LTN, English; LTF, French; LTA, Spanish; LTP, Political Science; LTS, Sociology; or LTH, History/Social Studies) must have an overall GPA of 2.5 and a GPA of 2.5 in the teaching field.
