Any undergraduate student at NC State or at other universities or community colleges can pursue faculty for mentored research. Indeed, many students from other universities come to NC State each summer to engage in research through our many Summer Research Experience (SRE) programs and grants earned by our distinguished faculty. See this SRE Link for detailed information about these summer programs. NC State students who wish to work in a SRE program at another university should explore this link. Most students elect or do their research here at NC State or in state and federal agencies, corporations and small businesses within the Research Triangle area.
No formal application is required of students, although applications must be filed for students interested in Summer Research Experience programs. Helpful to both you and the faculty is the Form for Students Link that helps faculty and outside scholars/professionals find you for participation in their research projects. Similarly, the Form for Faculty Link permits faculty or outside mentors to advertise their research topics and to inform students of the qualifications needed to work in their research setting.
