Summer Research @ Design Tech

About the Program: Design Tech is an interactive designed technology hothouse for undergraduate researchers and designers, spanning a 12-week summer. Participants will work with computer science and design faculty and industry on projects spanning artificial intelligence, graphics, and visualization as well as visual and interactive design. Sample projects include:

· Advanced AI for interactive narratives and games; including camera control, and story planning and level design.

· Automated tours through virtual and visualized environments.

· Visualizing streaming news feeds using swarming sprites, and interactive, ambient display walls.

· PDA-based art installations, and real-world navigation tools.

Program Activities: Students participating in this NSF-funded program will receive stipends of roughly $1600 per month and expenses for travel, room and board of $700 per month, while working in interdisciplinary teams on designed technology projects at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. Each team will meet semi-weekly with faculty from the Department of Computer Science and the College of Design, and all teams will engage in bi-weekly critique sessions with faculty and industry guests from companies such as Epic Games, IBM, and SAS. Projects will culminate in the DesignTech Showcase, to which Research Triangle Park industry, faculty as well as participant family and friends will be invited. Students will gain the cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural teamwork and communications skills so important in designed technology research and industry.

Other Information: Design Tech accepts applications nationally and year-round, admissions continue until mid-May for the following summer. Applications must be US citizens or permanent residents; Design Tech especially welcomes applications from women and minorities.
