NSF
Science & Technology Center for Environmentally Responsible Solvents and
Processes (CERSP)
About the Program: The primary focus
of CERSP is to build support for implementation of “green chemistry” by
discovering and enabling high-risk, high-impact science and technology that
will replace current unsustainable processes.
Apart from the technology, educational focus is on collaboration and
innovation. These are tools of global
importance, typically are not taught in academic programs, and are undergoing
transformation in today’s world. Our
collaboration program has evolved into a communications and leadership
workshop. We seek to provide a new
generation of students with both the technical and social tools to effect this
transition. Specifically our objectives are to
·
Prepare
students broadly for technical leadership in industry, academia, and government
·
Help
students, faculty and scientists contribute to the Center’s immediate success
by providing them opportunities to learn and practice a variety of strategies
and skills.
CERSP
supports internships to encourage undergraduates and high school students to
choose scientific careers. These programs are weighted towards historically
underrepresented segments of society.
Program
Activities: Research projects are mentored by graduate
students working with CERSP faculty at UNC-CH, NC State, and NC A&T
universities in “green chemistry and engineering”. In addition, three initiatives have been developed for participants
within established summer internships: (1) a shortened version of the Personal
Development Workshop geared to summer interns, (2) a seminar on
entrepreneurship lead by Center faculty who have successful startup companies,
and (3) a videoconference group meeting for reporting summer interns’ results.
