- Introduction to Research Ethics , a new course in the Self-paced Studies program offered through the Friday Center for Continuing Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will be open for registration January 1, 2005.
This is a 3-credit online course at the college level, suitable for advanced undergraduates and continuing education students. We will cover topics such as authorship, human subjects, animal subjects, mentoring, data management, professional responsibility and codes of conduct, intellectual property, basic ethical theory, and moral reasoning skills. This is neither a formal training course in RCR, nor one that fulfills compliance requirements. The two goals are 1) to introduce the major ideas of research ethics and 2) to help students begin to navigate through the rules and regulations researchers need to know. The course consists of required readings, written assignments submitted electronically to the instructor, discussion forums, and a final project.
You can enroll at any time and work at your own pace. To enroll you need access to a computer, e-mail, the World Wide Web and a Web browser the equivalent of Netscape 4.61 or higher, or Internet Explorer Version 5 or higher. Admission to UNC-Chapel Hill or another institution is not required to enroll in a Self-paced Studies course. Tuition for North Carolina residents is $324, for non-residents it is $660. Visit the Friday Center Web site at: http://fridaycenter.unc.edu/catalog for complete details and online registration.
