ASHE
- FLEETWOOD -- Hannah Bailey Whitaker,
daughter of Whit and Mary Kent Whitaker, 1051 Conley Cheek Road. Hannah
will graduate from Watauga High School where she is a Morehead Scholar finalist,
a National Merit semi-finalist and has received a Bronze Congressional award.
She was a nominee to the N.C. Governor's School in English, social studies,
science and art and attended in art. She is a student board member of the
Mountain Alliance Leadership Development Program, president of the Art Club,
vice president of the American Field Service, a member of the Cross Country
Club (letter), and has attended summer ventures in science and mathematics.
Hannah plans to major in anthropology.

BLADEN
- GARLAND -- Julie Beth Smith, daughter
of Thomas Milton and Nancy Locklear Smith, 134 Smith Mill Pond Road. Julie
will graduate from Lakewood High School where she was Chief Marshal, attended
N.C. Governor's School, was Student Government Association president for two
years, named a Student-of-the- Month, and made the Principal's "All A's"
list for four years. She is an Afterschool Care volunteer, Children's Church
teacher, member of the Beta Club and a member of the Quiz Bowl Team. Julie
plans to major in political science.

BUNCOMBE
- SWANNANOA -- Stacey Elizabeth Frederick,
daughter of Don and Beth Frederick, 809 Bee Tree Road. Stacey will graduate
from Charles D. Owen High School where she is president of Students Against
Destructive Decisions Club and Earthservice Corp., has been voted "Most
Likely to Succeed," and is a lifetime "A" honor roll student.
She has been a volunteer teacher of English as a Second Language in her elementary
school and is initiating student-led Spanish classes to first-grade students.
Stacey plans to major in business administration and minor in Spanish.
- ASHEVILLE
-- Katherine Rea Gerrald, daughter of Evander Kern and Beth Anderson
Gerrald, 425 Sondley Woods Place. Katherine will graduate from A.C. Reynolds
High School where she was a member of the All County Chorus in her junior
year, is a member of the National Honor Society, Junior Civitan Club, captain
of the Varsity Swim Team, president of the Senior Girls Club, and is listed
in her senior class Who's Who. Katherine plans to major in biochemistry.
- ASHEVILLE -- William Alexander Ronke,
son of Jorg A. and Mary Margaret Ronke, 13 N. Oak Forest Drive. Alex will
graduate from T.C. Roberson High School. He is an Eagle Scout, on the Alpha
Honor Roll, was a member of the school's Odyssey of the Mind Team at World
Competition and has placed in several state, regional, and national math competitions.
Drama is his extracurricular activity and he is an active member of the Skyland
United Methodist Church. Alex plans to major in computer science.

BURKE
- MORGANTON -- Matthew Walter Imboden,
son of Michael Walter and Joyce BeMiller Imboden, 210 Inglewood Drive. This
four-year Academic Excellence "A" Honor Roll member and senior-class
president will graduate from Freedom High School, where he has been voted
Humanities Program Student of the Year, was junior marshal at Commencement
Ceremonies, attended the Student Athlete Summer Institute in Boone, volunteers
as a D.A.R.E. role model at a local elementary school, is president, vice
president and secretary of the Calvary Lutheran Church Youth Group, and has
served as a worship assistant, lector, acolyte and crucifer. Matthew's major
is undecided.

CABARRUS
- CONCORD -- Yasmin Farahi, daughter
of Faramarz and Nekoo Dahi Farahi, 6032 Havencrest Court. Yasmin will graduate
from Northwest Cabarrus High School. She was co-chief junior marshal, a junior
volunteer at Northeast Medical Center, attended the N.C. Governor's School,
is president of the Beta Club, was a co-founder and is president of the Science
Club, vice president of the Math Club and Interact Club, member of the Keystone
Club, the Youth Council, and Apex Volunteers, and has been on the tennis team
for four years, making all-conference and most-improved player this year.
Yasmin is undecided about her major.

CARTERET
- MOREHEAD CITY -- James Quimby Wallace
IV, sson of James Quimby Wallace III and Betty Woolard Wallace, 3706 White
Drive. James will graduate from West Carteret High School as a Morehead Scholarship
finalist, president of West Carteret National Honor Society and the Spanish
Club, member of the "Best Delegation" award at the 2001 East Carolina
Model United Nations, and the recipient of numerous academic achievement awards.
He is a member of the Carteret Chorale and "The Aces," an a cappella
singing group, and took training at the Joffrey Ballet School, New York, for
two months, returning to win the solo title competition in "Mr. Dance
of North Carolina." James plans to major in political science.

CATAWBA
- VALE -- Lonnie Preston Coulter, son
of Dennis Earl and Cynthia Lutz Coulter, 8818 Mull Road. Lonnie will graduate
from Fred T. Foard High School, where he has been a grand prize winner in
the "Laws of Life" essay contest, the Daughters of the American
Revolution Good Citizen of the Year, a member of the 2000 Envirothon State
Championship team that placed ninth in national competition, and a Rutherford
Electric Membership Corporation Rural Electric Youth Tourist to Washington,
D.C. in 2001. He participated in football and track for four years, was varsity
football captain, qualified for the State meet twice, is a member and officer
in many school clubs, and is active in Trinity Lutheran Church Youth Group.
Lonnie plans to major in either architecture or engineering.

CHATHAM
- SILER CITY -- Ian David VanSchooten,
son of David Martin and Rosemary E. VanSchooten, 3000 Pleasant Hill Church
Road. Ian is a home-school graduate, a National Merit Scholar semi-finalist,
an Eagle Scout, and holds a black belt in Tae Kwan Do through the South Eastern
Karate Association. He has been a tutor-mentor for Chatham Together and now
tutors for St. Julia's Tutoring Ministry. He enjoys reading, mountain biking,
and fishing. Ian plans to major in mechanical engineering.

CHOWAN
- EDENTON -- Shelly Rae Harrell, daughter
of Walter Stanton and Lisa Styons Harrell, 110 W. Water St. Shelly attended
John A. Holmes High School during her freshman and sophomore years, where
she received an academic letter. She graduates from the North Carolina School
of Science and Mathematics, where she has received a "Ranatra Fusca,"
the highest award for creativity given by Odyssey of the Mind, and has placed
in state and regional Science Olympiad competitions. She volunteers as an
after-school tutor-mentor at a local church program for underprivileged children.
Shelly plans to major in one of the agricultural or life sciences.
- EDENTON -- Elizabeth Ellison Sieck,
daughter of Lonnie V. and Carol E. Sieck, 117 Blount St. Ellison will graduate
from John A. Holmes High School, where she has been president of the Key Club
and leadership co-captain of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Leadership
Team, has received a Holmes High School Literary Award and was one of four
students selected in the national competition for the Frank Lloyd Wright Taliesin
Junior Architect Apprenticeship Program. She was a N.C. Governor's office
page, a delegate to a conference sponsored by the Governor's Commission on
Volunteerism and Community Service, is a member of the Episcopal Diocese of
East Carolina "New Beginnings" program, and volunteers as a student
draftsman for the Edenton Historic Preservation Commission. Ellison plans
to major in environmental design and landscape architecture.

CUMBERLAND
- FAYETTEVILLE -- Michael Andrew Jerch,
son of Donald Karl Jerch and Patricia Jennifer Roher-Walsh, 229 Hillside Ave.
Michael attended freshman and sophomore years at Terry Sanford High School.
He will graduate after two years at the North Carolina School of Science and
Mathematics, where he has been a residential life assistant, a member of the
Ethical Awareness Group, president of the film-analysis club, and vice president
of the Key Club. He runs cross-country and track, is the founder of the Society
for the Easily Amused, belongs to Spectrum, is on the prom committee, and
is a graduation marshal. Michael is undecided about his major.

DUPLIN
- BEULAVILLE -- Margie Ellen Houston,
daughter of Gregg T. Houston and Debbie Whaley Houston, 1662 Sarecta Road.
Margie will graduate from East Duplin High School, where she has been a Hugh
O'Brian Youth Leadership Ambassador, won the I Dare You! Leadership Award,
was chief marshal for her junior year and is a Morehead Scholar nominee. She
is a senior-class officer and plays varsity basketball, volleyball and softball.
Margie's goal is to become a large-animal veterinarian. She plans to major
in biological sciences.

- DURHAM -- Shelton Maurice Jones II,
son of Shelton Maurice and Katie Evans Jones, 16 Aman Court. Shelton will
graduate from Hillside High School, where he has won first place in the City
of Medicine High School Competition and in the Sigma Xi Student Research Symposium.
He is an All-American Scholar Athlete in basketball, is included in Who's
Who Among American High School Students, served as president and volunteer
of American Red Cross Venture Crew 616, co-captains the varsity basketball
team, and is a Peace Missionary Baptist Church academic tutor. Shelton plans
to major in computer engineering.

FORSYTH
- LEWISVILLE -- Zachary John Abernathy,
son of Ronnie L. and Amy D. Abernathy, 1208 Bebb Willow Lane. Zach will graduate
from West Forsyth High School, where he is a National Merit semi-finalist,
a member of the West Forsyth National Honor Society, a North Carolina Governor's
School alumnus, and received the West Forsyth High School Scholar Athlete
Award. He is a Math Ace on the Academic Team, runs on the cross-country team,
serves on the Town of Lewisville's Student Leadership Committee, is already
attending advanced mathematics classes at Wake Forest University, and is a
member of the Interact and Spanish clubs. Zach plans to major in mathematics.
- WINSTON-SALEM -- Haddon Clarke Kirk,
Haddon Clarke Kirk, son of Haddon Spurgeon Kirk III and Ruth Marsh Kirk, 2180
Faculty Drive. Haddon will graduate from the McCallie School in Chattanooga,
Tenn., where he plays varsity football and soccer, is a National Merit semi-finalist,
vice president of the school's chapter of the National Honor Society, and
was inducted into Keo-Kio, a senior leadership organization. He is a resident
advisor in the freshman dorm and a member of the campus entertainment committee.
Haddon plans to major in engineering.

FRANKLIN
- LOUISBURG -- Kosha Shonyetta Tucker,
daughter of Willie Arthur and Dorraine Evans Tucker, 264 Dorsey Road. Kosha
will graduate from Bunn High School, where she has been ranked number-one
in her class for four years. She is a Morehead Scholarship finalist, a bronze
medalist in 1-A State Track and Field Competition, and a North Carolina Governor's
School graduate. She also served as president of the Beta Club, captain of
the varsity cheerleaders, Student Council secretary, a member of the Spanish
Honor Society, the National Vocational Technical Honor Society, the Mock Trial
Team, and as president of her church youth group. Kosha plans to major in
chemical engineering.

GASTON
- GASTONIA -- Ryan Edwin Thompson,
son of Gerald E. and Janet L. Thompson, 3882 Gardner Park Drive. Ryan will
graduate from Ashbrook High School, where he is Ashbrook's representative
to, and secretary of, the Gaston County Student Advisory Board. He has volunteered
as a role model in the D.A.R.E. program, is a member of the National Honor
Society and, during summer 2001, studied choral music at the North Carolina
Governor's School. He participated in a European concert tour and performance
in Carnegie Hall with the Ashbrook Chorus, and has been a delegate to Summer
Ventures in Science and Math at UNC-Wilmington. Ryan plays varsity soccer
and golf, is captain of the swim team, and plans to major in engineering/product
design.

- MAURY -- Hollis Cherry Moye, daughter
of Lawrence Anderson Moye III and Mitzi Cherry Moye, P.O. Box 40. Holly will
graduate from the Arendell Parrott Academy. She has received the North Carolina
Governor's Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service, attended the North Carolina
Governor's School in mathematics, is co-captain of the varsity field hockey
and soccer teams, and has been a three-time national medalist in the Science
Olympiad Competition. She has served as vice president of the Tri-M National
Music Honors Society, is president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes,
and belongs to Snow Hill Presbyterian Church. She is a volunteer English as
a Second Language instructor in Greene County, a member of the Beta Club,
and founder of the school's Outdoor Club. Holly plans to attend First Year
College at NC State, with career interests that include environmental studies
and rural economic development.

GUILFORD
- GREENSBORO -- Shannon Joy Gillespie,
daughter of Joel S. and Susan J. Gillespie, 5405 Courtfield Drive. Shannon
will graduate from Northwest Guilford Senior High School, where she is a National
Merit semi-finalist, a College Board AP Scholar, a recipient of a North Carolina
A & T Academic Achievement Award, and a Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Mathematics and Science Award winner. She has played varsity softball for
four years, ran on the varsity cross-country team, earned two gold cups for
her piano performances at competition, is a Silver Award Girl Scout, and serves
as a counselor for special-needs girls at Ontario Pioneer Camp. She's considering
a dual major in arts and sciences.
- GREENSBORO -- Sharon Didinh Luong,
daughter of Linh Hai and Khanh Tran Luong, 815 Bass Landing Place. Sharon
will graduate from Grimsley Senior High School, where she is a member of the
National Honor Society, the Advanced Spanish Club, the Greensboro Symphony
Youth Orchestra, and a National Merit Commended Scholar. She participates
in the School Honors Orchestra, the Olympiad Team and Teens Active in Greensboro
Service (TAGS). Sharon plans to study the biological sciences, with a goal
of becoming a geneticist or marine biologist.
- GREENSBORO -- Meng Mao, son of Lunjin
and Shuying Wang Mao, 4535 Fence Drive. Meng completed his freshman and sophomore
years at Northwest Guilford High School. He has attended the North Carolina
School of Science and Mathematics for the past two years, where he placed
in the 2001 N.C. Math Contest, has been recognized by the Research Science
Institute, and was offered a full scholarship to Simon's Rock College. He
plays ultimate Frisbee and is a coordinator and instructor at the School of
Science and Mathematics Asian-language seminars. Meng plans to major in computer
science.
- HIGH POINT -- David Mark McGinley,
son of Dr. W. Mark and Deborah Ann McGinley, 3104 Robinwood Court. David will
graduate from Southwest Guilford High School, where he has been a National
Ventures Scholar, an Advanced Placement Scholar, National Merit Commended
Scholar and for three years has been listed in Who's Who Among American High
School Students. He is an Eagle Scout, a founding member of the Southwest
Fencing Team, the Beta Honor Club, theWeb Design Club, and the Chess Club.
David plans to major in computer engineering or computer science.
- HIGH POINT -- Mary Caroline Milan,
daughter of Larry E. and Jane Edwards Milan, 131 Duchess Court. Mary will
graduate from Southwest Guilford High School, where she was chief junior marshal,
was co-captain of the state-champion team at the North Carolina Ocean Sciences
Bowl, is founder and chairperson of the Senior Class Project, and is a Morehead
Scholarship Finalist. She is a four-year letterman, regional and state qualifier,
All-Conference, varsity team swimmer with a Coach's Award. She is also vice
president of the Environmental Club, a member of Student Council, an elementary-school
tutor, a Special Olympics volunteer and YMCA camp counselor. Mary plans to
major in parks and recreation and tourism management.
- COLFAX -- Kelly Alison Smith, daughter
of Alfred Lewis and Betsy Bowman Smith, 722 S. Bunker Hill Road. Kelly will
graduate from Northwest Guilford High School, where she has held several class
officer positions on Student Council, is captain of a seven-time national
All Star cheerleading squad, has an individual National Champion Award, and
was voted Miss Viking as Best All-Around Senior. She belongs to the National
Honor Society and volunteers for school clean-up projects, Habitat for Humanity,
and various charity Christmas projects. She is a member of the Sis-Bro Tutoring
Program, the Pep Club, and the Student School Improvement Team. Kelly plans
to major in psychology or pre-med.

HALIFAX
- HALIFAX -- Mary Catherine Tripp,
daughter of Benjamin Ronnie and Jean Harris Tripp, PO Box 428. Mary attended
Halifax Academy and will graduate from Northern Nash Senior High School, where
she has been voted Most Likely to Succeed, Best AP Biology Student, and Junior
Marshal. She was first runner-up in the 2001 Roanoke Valley Junior Miss Pageant.
She has been a dance student for most of her life, is a cheerleader, and has
memberships in the National Honor Society, Key Club, Drama Club, and National
Junior Beta Club. Mary plans to major in biochemistry.

- CANTON -- Joseph Patrick Ferrara,
son of Joe and Joan Ferrara, 298 Timberhill Drive. Joseph will graduate from
Pisgah High School, where he has been voted Most Likely to Succeed, was Chief
Junior Marshal, and serves as a role model in the D.A.R.E. program. He has
been a Student Council representative for the past three years, plays varsity
basketball, and belongs to the SAT 1400+ Club. He is also an Honor Society
and LEO Club member, is a Haywood Electric Youth Tour winner, volunteers for
Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels, was a delegate to the Rotary World
Affairs Conference, is training to be a pilot, and belongs to the Central
Methodist Church Youth Group. Joseph plans to major in aeronautical engineering.

- CLAYTON -- Carrie Marie Wilkerson,
daughter of Dana Reginald and Kathy Ballard Wilkerson, 344 Forest Oaks Drive.
Carrie will graduate from Clayton High School, where she has been Student
Government Association class president for four years. She is president of
the National Honor Society, chair of the NHS Tutoring Committee, has received
a "C Award" for community service and involvement, and is a Daughters
of the American Revolution Good Citizen Scholarship winner. She was Superintendent's
Choice for North Carolina Governor's School, is president of the Fellowship
of Christian Athletes, and is a member of the First Baptist Church, the Youth
Group, and Acteens, a mission group. Carrie plans to major in biology.

- SANFORD -- Ryan Charles Garrett,
son of Matt and Becky Garrett, 2619 Bellaire Drive. Ryan will graduate from
Lee Christian School, where he is a Morehead Scholar semi-finalist, president
of both the Student Government Association and the Key Club, and a varsity
soccer, basketball and baseball player. He reads and records local newspaper
columns for the blind, through Southeastern North Carolina Radio Reading Service,
Inc. Ryan plans to major in engineering.

- MARSHALL -- Elizabeth Louise Hyatt,
daughter of Stanley Vaiden and Judith Gayle Hyatt, 793 Delis Cliff Road. Beth
will graduate from North Buncombe High School, where she was a Student of
the Month, on the "A" Honor Roll for the past two years, received
a Principal's Choice Art Award, and is a D.A.R.E. role model. She is editor-in-chief
of the school yearbook, a member of the Beta Club, participates in indoor
and outdoor track and field and is pianist at the Dillingham Presbyterian
Church. Beth plans to major in architecture and graphic design.

McDOWELL
- MARION -- Tyler Sunland Pool, daughter
of Clarence Randy and Barbara Craig Pool, 340 Fish Hatchery Road. Tyler will
graduate from McDowell High School, where she has received a Daughters of
the American Revolution Good Citizenship Award, was a Principal's Leadership
Award nominee, serves as president of the Beta Club and Student Body, is vice
president of the school's chapter of the National Honor Society, volunteer-tutors
at a local elementary school, and sits on the McDowell County United Way Board
of Directors. Tyler plans to enroll in First Year College at NC State, and
wants to be either a pediatrician or a teacher.

MECKLENBERG
- CHARLOTTE -- Danielle Elyse Brockington,
daughter of John Henry Tucker Jr. and Lisa Lavone Brockington, 3931 Potomac
Court. Danielle will graduate from Myers Park High School, where she is yearbook
editor-in-chief, a National Achievement semi-finalist, a member of the National
Honor Society, the National Art Honor Society and the Coca-Cola Teen Board.
She is also a Phoenix executive board member, a tutor and graphic designer,
and a volunteer for Hands-On Charlotte. Tyler plans to major in graphic design
and English or comparative literature.
- CHARLOTTE -- Jennifer Ann Crutchfield,
daughter of Brian Andrew and Debbie Whisnant Crutchfield, 4511 Morrowick Road.
Jennifer will graduate from Myers Park High School, where she is student-body
treasurer, trumpet-section leader and brass captain of the marching band,
a member of the track team, president of the Advanced Spanish Club, and founder/vice
president of the Cultural Diversity Club. She is vice president of Young Republicans,
secretary of First Priority, member of the choir and handbell choir at Providence
United Methodist Church, and student organizer of the school's 9/11 Memorial.
She volunteers as a Spanish translator for Health in Partnership. Jennifer
plans to major in biochemistry and eventually become a pediatrician.
- CHARLOTTE -- Patrick Robert Elliot,
son of Antonio Roberto and Maria Alejandra Elliot, 4331 Old Saybrook Court.
Patrick will graduate from Charlotte Catholic High School, where he is a Morehead
Scholarship semi-finalist, a National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar,
played soccer with the school's 2-A State Champion team, and has been first,
academically, in his class for two years. He is founder and president of the
school's chapter of Amnesty International, vice president of the school's
National Honor Society chapter and vice president of his senior class. Patrick
plans to seek a Ph.D. in genetics.
- CHARLOTTE -- Danielle Lee Proffit,
daughter of Eugene McNeil and Donna Anthony Proffit, 5345 Mountain Point Lane.
Danielle will graduate from Myers Park High School. She has attended the North
Carolina Governor's School, is a member of the National Honor Society and
Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society. She has been on the International Baccalaureate
A, A/B Honor Roll for three years. She has served an academic internship in
nuclear energy at Duke Energy, participated in NC State's Textile Summer Research
Program, and was a member of the Western Regional Honors Orchestra and All-State
Orchestra. Danielle plans to major in engineering.
- CHARLOTTE -- Diana Elizabeth Proffit,
daughter of Eugene McNeil and Donna Anthony Proffit, 5345 Mountain Point Lane.
Diana will graduate from Myers Park High School, where she is a member of
the National Honor Society, attended North Carolina Governor's School in instrumental
music, has been on the International Baccalaureate A/B Honor Roll for three
years and is a member of the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society. She is a violinist
in the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra, the N.C. Honors Orchestra and the
N.C. Western Regional Honors Orchestra. She served an academic internship
in nuclear engineering at Duke Energy, and participated in NC State's Summer
Textile Research Program. Diana plans to major in engineering.
- CHARLOTTE -- Elizabeth Dunaway Sturges,
daughter of Francis William and Sheldon Love Sturges, 3311 Nancy Creek Road.
Bess will graduate from Providence High School, where she has been junior
and now senior Chief Marshal, and a member of the National Honor Society.
She earned God and Country's God and Life Award and is a Silver Award Girl
Scout. She belongs to the Providence United Methodist Youth Council, Youth
Choir, and the Environmental Club, and has served internships at Duke Power
and Fox 18 News. Bess plans to major in meteorology.
- CHARLOTTE -- Elizabeth Ann Woolf,
daughter of Steven Harrill and Karen Snider Woolf, 1200 Industrial Drive.
Libby will graduate from Providence Day School, where she received the Top
Scholar Award her junior year, has been on the Headmaster's List for four
years, and is a member of the National Honor Society and Cum Laude Society.
Libby also participates in track and field, Stage Crew, Academic Team, Students
for the Political Advancement of Mankind, and the Science Olympiad team. She
plans to major in engineering and become a civil engineer.

NASH
- ROCKY MOUNT -- Matthew David Alston,
son of Dr. Richard David and Jan Raphael Alston, 104 Manchester Court. Matt
will graduate from Rocky Mount Academy, where he was a 2001 NC Governor's
School Attendee, and is now both senior class president and National Honor
Society president. He is a team captain and all-conference varsity basketball
player, and editor of the yearbook. Matt attended NC Summer Ventures in Science
and Math at UNC-Charlotte. He plans to major in civil engineering.

finalist and a Tom Suiter's WRAL Extra Effort award recipient. Georgia has
earned 16 varsity athletic letters, is a member of Beta Club, and has been
sophomore, junior and senior class president. She plans to major in sports
management with an athletic concentration and wants to become a collegiate
athletic administrator.

Drive. Hilary will graduate from Rocky Mount Senior High. She is a Morehead
Scholarship Finalist, received the George R. Edwards Award for highest class
average, the International Baccalaureate American History Departmental Award,
and was selected for the Governor's School in the area of social science.
She is a member of varsity swimming, Community Theatre, the Rocky Mount Academy
of Dance, and president of the Key Club. She is also a Vacation Bible School
teacher and elementary school tutor. Hilary will major in history or political

will graduate from John T. Hoggard High School, where he is a member of the
National Honor Society. He received the John T. Hoggard Marching Viking Award
in 2000 for excellence in marching band, placed third in the Mission Possible
event at NC State's Science Olympiad in 2001, was state winner of the 2001
4-H Application Resume Interview, and represented North Carolina at the National
4-H Congress. Jeffrey is a member of the Boy Scouts, working towards an Eagle
Scout award, and participates in the high-school symphonic band, the senior-high
church youth group, and the Cape Fear Soccer Association. He also serves on
the Math Team, the Octagon Club, the Beta Club, Habitat for Humanity, the
Salvation Army Wood Lot project, and the ultimate Frisbee team. He plans to
major in textile and chemical engineering.

chemical engineering and textile chemistry, and wants to work in the textile

(SASI). Ben plays varsity basketball, and has been the golf team's MVP for

of the Winterville Watermelon Festival Committee. Ben wants to major in biology,

- METAIRIE -- Carrie Margaret Goodson,
daughter of Fred Perry and Lisa Hearn Goodson, 4704 Reich St. Carrie attended
Grace King High School and will graduate from the Louisiana School for Math,
Science, and the Arts. She has held several elected positions with Student
Government, participated in the Tulane Science Scholar Program, serves as
counsel to Louisiana Girls' State, is captain of the crew-rowing team, and
serves as an East Jefferson Hospital Junior Volunteer. Carrie plans to major
in microbiology and become a physician.
- BATON ROUGE -- Mary Emmita Lyford,
daughter of John Lyford IV and Joyce Hoyt Lyford, 1149 Castle Kirk Drive.
Emmita will graduate from University Laboratory School, where she is a member
of the school's chapter of the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor
Society, and Teens as Leaders. She is a Presidential Classroom Scholar, has
numerous academic awards (including a Greater Baton Rouge State Fair Junior
Volunteer Scholarship), has been a representative to Louisiana Girls' State,
and participated in the Military Order of World Wars Youth Patriotic and Leadership
Conference. She earned Girl Scout Silver and Gold awards, belongs to St. James
Episcopal Church Youth Group, and serves as a vestry member. Emmita plans
to major in landscape architecture.

DeRIDDER -- Tamara Beth
Rucker, daughter of Terry Glenn and Kim Marie Rucker, 512 American Legion
Road. Tamara attended DeRidder High School and will graduate from the Louisiana
School for Math, Science, and the Arts. An Honor Roll student, she has maintained
a 4.0 grade-point average (GPA) for each of the last four years, is president
of the Medical Explorers Club, serves as board member and volunteer coordinator
for the Beta Club, and is student director of, and plays French horn in,
the Louisiana All-State Band. She is secretary of the Latin Club, a National
Latin Exam Silver Medalist, a student government senator-at-large, sits
on the Honor Code Court, plays softball and enjoys fitness swimming. Tamara
has not yet chosen a major.

FREEPORT -- Peter Benjamin
Schwanda, son of John Charles and Janet White Schwanda, 95 Baker Road.
Peter will graduate from Freeport High School. He earned a Bausch and Lomb
Honorary Science Award, exceeded standards in reading, writing, math, and
social studies on the Maine Educational Assessment tests, and took first
place in the 2001 Richard Grindle Memorial Skimeister Festival. He is a
member of the Future Problem-Solving Team, which won the state competition
and qualified the team to compete internationally. He is active in the mentoring
program, belongs to the Math Team, and is a member of the National Honor
Society. He is also a member of Student Council's Student Union Advisory
Committee, and is a three-sport varsity athlete. He participated in a Dominican
Republic mission trip and is a member of Young Life. Peter plans to major
in architecture and become a licensed architect.

- GREENBELT -- Diane Lynne Biederman,

Canning Terrace. Diane will graduate from Eleanor Roosevelt High School, where
she is a member of the school's chapter of the National Honor Society. She
has maintained honor-roll grades from kindergarten through 12th grade, earned
a Maryland Distinguished Scholars Honorable Mention, and won a German Embassy
Book Award. She is co-president of both the Photography Club and the German
Honor Society, and served as a biology intern at the National Zoo's Amazonia
Exhibit. Diane plans to major in biology and become either a veterinarian
or a wildlife conservationist.

Heaton, daughter of Harold Irving and Rebecca Ann Heaton, 28437 Honeysuckle
Drive. Laura will graduate from Damascus High School, where she is a member
of the school's chapter of the National Honor Society. She is a member of
the National Forensics League, earning the first three degrees for debate
and speech. She took individual fourth-place in the 4-H Eastern National
Roundup in the Hippology Contest and has competed at 4-H Nationals on the
Maryland Horse Bowl Team (1999) and the Maryland Horse Judging Team (2000).
Laura plans to major in biology, and she wants to be a veterinarian.

-- Allison Marie Hurwitz, daughter of Jeffrey Ian and Patricia Lynn
Hurwitz, PO Box 674. Allison will graduate from Middletown High School, where
she is senior-class vice president, arts editor of the student newspaper,
Roundtable, serves as Thespian Society clerk, and belongs to the National
Honor Society. She is Vocal Ensemble secretary, works as director/teacher
of Theater for Kids, and has been involved in six high-school theater productions
to date. She volunteers at Advocates for the Homeless, and at Frederick Memorial
Hospital. She has interned at CMW Group Architects. Allison plans to major
in architecture, and wants to design low-cost housing.
- PASADENA -- Matthew Paul Latrick,
son of Donald Paul and Marsha Lukowsky Latrick, 1202 Lorene Court. Matt will
graduate from Chesapeake Senior High School, where he is president of the
Interact Club, is a member of the School Improvement Team, and is vice president
of the school's chapter of the National Honor Society. He is a Life Scout
in the Boy Scouts, and serves as a senior patrol leader. He plays varsity
tennis, serves as both defense and prosecution on the Mock Trial Team, is
a Maryland Distinguished Scholar, captain of the "It's Academic"
Team, and Economics State Champion in the Future Business Leaders of America
competition. In addition to his school accomplishments, he works part-time
at Angel's Food Market. Matt plans to major in political science and pursue
degrees in business and law.

Drive, N.W. Ligaya will graduate from Beall High School, where she is a
Maryland Distinguished Scholar semi-finalist, vice president of the school's
chapter of the National Honor Society, and recipient of a Bausch and Lomb
Science Award from the University of Rochester (for science aptitude). She
also earned a Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership Award. She takes EMT-B training,
volunteers at the Frostburg Area Ambulance Co., is a four-year member of
the marching and concert bands - where she's the saxophone section leader
- and participates in the varsity bowling and track teams. Ligaya plans
to major in chemical engineering and pulp-and-paper science.

Schoonover, son of Lester Gerald and Adrienne Ruth Schoonover, 4404
Morningwood Drive. Kevin will graduate from Sherwood High School, where
he is president of the school's chapter of the National Honor Society and
vice president of the Spanish Honor Society. He has served as parliamentarian
for Student Government, and is a three-year Scholar Athlete for his participation
in varsity baseball and indoor track. He belongs to the Joyful Noise Choir
and St. Peters Youth Group. Kevin plans to major in aerospace engineering,

180th Ave. Christina concurrently attends and will graduate from Big Rapids
High School and the Math/Science/Technology Center (MSTC), where she earned
Top Gun honors her freshman, sophomore and junior years. She earned a Gold
Certificate, Gold Pin, and Gold Letter for her 3.5+ grade-point average
on the Highest Honor Roll. She is a member of the school's chapter of the
National Honor Society, has received U.S. Navy and U.S. Army awards for
her skill in presenting research, and has been nominated or accepted for
various summer programs through the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine
at the Michigan Summer Institute. She participated in mission trips to Brazil
and Venezuela, and took part in field-studies programs in Hawaii. She is
captain of the school's National Ocean Science Bowl Team, was team captain
for the Spaghetti Bridge Building project, was a member of the Varsity Quiz
Bowl team that reached the State Finals, and serves on the Big Rapids student
council. She is MSTC Student Government treasurer, and editor of the yearbook.
She has participated in Michigan Tech University's Summer Youth Program,
tutors Spanish, plays the piano, and is a member of her church's choir and
youth group. Christina plans to major in marine science and become a research
scientist.

- GREAT NECK -- Lisa Ann Last, daughter

who will graduate from Great Neck South High School, where she is a National
Merit semi-finalist and a National Hispanic Scholar. She received a Millennium
Dreamer Award for community service. She is president of the American Sign
Language Club, secretary of the Science Olympiad team, and a participant in
the Columbia University Science Honors Program. She volunteers at North Hempstead's
animal shelter and was PAWS Student of the Year in 2001. Lisa plans to major
in animal science and become a veterinarian specializing in feline behavior.

WARWICK -- Thomas Christopher
O'Neil, son of Thomas E. and Linda L. O'Neil, 27 N. Lynn St. Tom will
graduate from Warwick Valley High School, where he has been a member of
the school's chapter of the National Honor Society for three years. He has
been a Columbia University Honors Science Program participant for two years.
He participated in the Operation Catapult summer program at the Rose Holman
Institute, and qualified for the High Honor Roll all four years. He earned
the highest average in Math Course II and is the Math Team captain. He played
both junior-varsity and varsity soccer and tennis, and belongs to the Orange
County Academic League. He is a church usher, and in his spare time has
customized a 1974 Volkswagen. Tom wants to major in mechanical engineering.

- FORT MILL -- Taylor Morrison Bowman,
son of Dennis Ray and Patsy Morrison Bowman, 1684 Saddlewood Drive. Taylor
will graduate from Fort Mill High School, where he is a National Merit semi-finalist.
He received two awards for his mentoring skills: the Governor Jim Hodges South
Carolina Heroes Award, and the Outstanding Local Make a Difference Day Award,
for which he received a $1,000 grant. In 1999, he won all-region cross-country
running awards, and for two years he has been a soccer-team starter and letterman.
He is Beta Club sergeant-at-arms, and enjoys fishing, canoeing, hiking and
photography. Taylor plans to enroll in the College of Management, and would
like to start his own business.
- COLUMBIA -- Robert Patrick Richter,
son of Paul Vernon and Jane V.E. Richter, 237 Woodlands West. Robby will graduate
from Spring Valley High School, where he is Spring Valley's sole male student
nominated for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award (for outstanding athletic
and scholastic achievement and community service), and has received a Bausch
and Lomb Honorary Science Award from the University of Rochester. He is an
All-State Orchestra violist, and performs in the Richland II District Orchestra.
He is the kicker/punter on the varsity football team, was varsity soccer goalkeeper,
serves as secretary of the school's chapter of the National Honor Society,
and earned Eagle Scout honors as a freshman. Robby plans to major in engineering,
and wants to be an electrical or civil engineer.

CHAPIN -- Beth Marie
Washington, daughter of Peter and Barbara Dennis Washington, 12200 Broad
River Road. Beth will graduate from Chapin High School, where she is vice
president of the Beta Club. She plays on the All-State and All-Region tennis
teams, and also plays varsity softball. She's a member of the SAT team,
serves as senior-class secretary, and is president of the Lake Murray Presbyterian
youth group. She's also lieutenant of the high school's marching band, and
participated in Palmetto Girls' State activities as a junior. Beth plans
to major in biomedical engineering and pursue a career in the medical field.

in International Living, he traveled to Brittany, France, in 2001. He won
third place in the 1999 Dick Blick National Art Award for linoleum printing,
and received the Optimist Club of Nashville's Youth Appreciation Award. He
was class representative for two years on MBA's Honor Council, and was a member
of the Junior Honor Society. He is also a four-year member and representative
of MBA's Service Club, is a member of the varsity wrestling team, and serves
as art editor for Archives, the school's literary magazine. Walt plans to
major in business management.

Lane, Hixson. Doug will graduate from McCallie School, where he has participated
in the school's chapter of Amnesty International and is now president. He
has received the T.E.P. Woods Award for Academic Excellence for four years,
received a Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award from the University of
Rochester, and won a Ware Calculus Award. He is a reporter for Tornado,
the school's online newspaper, is an attorney on the school's mock-trial
team, serves as philosophy chair of The Hague (a discussion group), and
is a member of the school's chapter of the National Honor Society. Doug
plans to major in chemical engineering.

Strings Select Chamber Orchestra. He has been a Boy Scout for 13 years,

won a Dartmouth Book Award. Candice plans to major in business management,
and wants to be owner of a successful business.

Jones, daughter of Steven Lawrence Walsh and Diana Taylor Jones-Walsh,
127 Doe Crossing Place, Aylett. Lindsey will graduate from King William High
School, where she is on the Superintendent's Honor Roll (earning straight
A's all four years), and is a member of the school's chapter of the National
Honor Society. She has placed magna cum laude, maxima cum laude, and cum laude
on the National Latin Exam, is a Voice of Democracy Scholarship finalist,
and participated in the summer Governor's School for Medicine. She was named
"most valuable player" in the Scholastic Bowl, and she attended
the Chesapeake Bay Governor's School for Marine and Environmental Science.
She participates in photojournalism as a photo editor, enjoys track and field
sports and cross-country running, and practices debate on the school forensics
team. She is a qualified lifeguard. Lindsey plans to double-major in biology
and chemistry or biochemistry. She wants to be a pediatric surgeon.

of the Beta Club. She is captain of the color guard, a member of the Show
Choir, and a four-year member of the Latin Club. Kate plans to major in
meteorology, and wants to work at the National Severe Storms Laboratory
in Oklahoma.

-- Ashley Meghan Tharrington, daughter of A. Keith and Sally W. Tharrington,
455 Buggs Island Road. Ashley attends both Park View High School and the
Governor's School for Global Economics and Technology. She won first-place
team and third-place individual honors in the 2000 National Land, Pasture,
and Range Judging Contest. She was the 2001 Junior Miss South Hill, a Lee-Jackson
Regional Essay Contest winner, and a Farm Bureau StateYouth Leadership Award
winner. She is a Moose International Youth Awareness Speaker, a youth Sunday-school
teacher, and the Park View Future Farmers of America chapter president.
She tutors in the Mecklenburg County schools and works part-time as a secretary
for a local insurance agency. Ashley plans to major in pulp and paper science
and technology. She wants to be a research scientist in the paper and textile
industry.

Court. Crystal will graduate from Central Catholic High School, an Honor Roll
student for four years and a member of the National Honor Society. She is
a four-year letterman in soccer and the team's co-captain, and a three-year
letterman in basketball. She participated in two All-Tournament teams. She
is a peer mediator, a spiritual leader for Eucharistic Ministers, and volunteers
for the Easter Seals Parent's Night Out Program. Crystal plans to major in
marketing or human resource management.

Matt will graduate from Jesuit High School, where he is a National Merit
Scholar semi-finalist. Twice named Jesuit Student of the Month, he has served
apprenticeships in science and engineering through the Oregon Graduate Institute,
and won a summer engineering internship at Micropump, Inc. He won a Science
Department Award as a junior, and has been a member of the National Honor
Society for two years. He is on the Youth Leadership Team of his parish's
junior-high youth group, and serves on the Youth Ministry board of directors.
He is a member of the school's "High Five" Scholastic Competition
Team, an Easter Seals Camp volunteer counselor, a math and science tutor,
a flag-football referee, and plays recreational league baseball. Matt plans
to major in engineering.
