We Count On Nature to Teach Our Children
We Count On Nature / To Teach Our Children

Researchers at NC State believe that the key to reducing some of the biggest risks facing children, such as obesity, hypertension and diabetes, can be found outdoors. Through the Natural Learning Initiative, NC State is working with parks and recreation providers, schools and child-care centers to create outdoor environments that are irresistible to children.

Visit one of our projects and you'll find children playing together under a giant leafy tree, riding bikes along a twisting pathway, and carefully tending plants in a densely flowering garden. The play area becomes an extension of the classroom, where children solve the riddles of the natural world and gain confidence and social skills.

Best of all, a love of physical activity and adventure will stay with them throughout their lives - and promote healthy choices.
