The NCSU Libraries will host an Open House for its Assistive Technologies Center from 2 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28. The NC State community is invited to attend. There will be a brief, informal presentation about issues facing patrons with disabilities and the various types of assistive technology available in the center. Following the presentation, there will be an opportunity for attendees to ask questions and use the equipment.
Orders for the SEANC District 39 doughnut sale will be taken on Tuesday, Feb. 26, with delivery on Friday, Mar. 1. Plain glazed doughnuts are $3.50 per box and chocolate glazed doughnuts are $4.50 per box. Proceeds of the sales go to District 39's Scholarship Fund. The College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (PAMS) has been recognized as this year's winner of the Freshman Advocacy Award. This award has been given annually since 1994 by the First Year College to those individuals who have greatly supported first-year students. The award was expanded two years ago to consider groups on campus as well as individuals. PAMS is the first college to receive the award.
TIAA-CREF and Human Resources are sponsoring employee appreciation night at the NC State women's basketball game on Feb. 25. The Lady Wolfpack will play at 7 p.m. in Reynolds Coliseum against Clemson. Admission is free to all NC State staff and faculty employees with a valid campus ID, as well as children 17 years old and under. A special suite located on the north end of the coliseum has been reserved for employees to mingle prior to tip-off and during halftime. Drawings for prizes will be held at halftime in the suite. Entries must be made by the four-minute mark of the first half.
The NC State chapter of Lambda Pi Eta will host an academic conference entitled "CommUnion: An Interdisciplinary Exploration of Ideology & Invention" from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Apr. 1, in the Talley Student Center. There is no charge for attending. The CommUnion conference, formerly known as the Communication Research Symposium, will discuss the various interdependencies between academic disciplines, what those relationships mean and why they are important. The conference provides an environment in which students can share their work with other students and their professors, and also interact as peers with professors in an informal setting. The conference will include roundtable discussions, information booths and a silent auction featuring items donated from Triangle businesses and cultural centers. CommUnion organizers are currently seeking creative, original work for exhibit and presentation. The deadline for submissions is Mar. 15. The Learning Technology Service (LTS) offers training for NC State faculty, staff and graduate students engaged in developing online instruction. LTS workshops cover an expanded range of topics pertaining to instructional technology, Web page development, and the WebCT and WolfWare course management systems. The annual drive to collect and recycle old phone books is now under way. Phone books may be placed beside the recycling bins at your building's "central location," or may be brought to the large collection sites at the Motor Pool and the Avent Ferry Complex parking lot. The intramural-recreational sports department (IM-REC) will host the 2nd annual NC State's Largest Fitness Class from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20, on courts 9-11 in Carmichael Gymnasium. The first 300 people to attend will receive an IM-REC towel.

The 2002 NC State Awards for Excellence program is underway. This recognition program is designed to reward the accomplishments and achievements of permanent full-time NC State employees. Up to 45 employees (29 SPA and 16 non-faculty EPA) will be selected as unit award recipients. These names will be submitted to the selection committee, which will determine five university-level winners, four SPA and one EPA. Winners of unit awards will be granted eight hours of time off, with the university-level winners receiving another eight hours of time off. University-level winners will also be nominated for the State Employees Award for Excellence, formerly the Governor’s Award for Excellence. Nomination forms are available from your unit chairperson. The Furniture Manufacturing and Management (FMM) Center, a part of the College of Engineering, is seeking research proposals from faculty at NC State and other North Carolina universities. Through industry sponsorship, the FMM Center supports research and technology transfer projects with the potential to improve the competitiveness of furniture manufacturers. Proposals will be accepted through March 15 with award notifications in May. Project funding will cover the period July 1, 2002, through June 30, 2003. An animal loss and grief support group, sponsored by NC State's Veterinary Teaching Hospital, is currently meeting on the first and third Tuesdays of every month at 7 p.m. in the Green Commons area of the College of Veterinary Medicine (downstairs in CVM past the library).
