Air Force ROTC honored with award

The Air Force Officer Accession and Training Schools (AFOATS) recently announced that Detachment 595 at NC State has been awarded the Air Force Organizational Excellence Award for the period July 1, 1999, to June 30, 2001. Only 12 of the 143 detachments in Air Force ROTC received the award this year.

The award, established by the Secretary of the Air Force in 1969, is granted to military units that distinguish themselves during peacetime, or in action against hostile forces or an armed enemy. The award is restricted to recognize acts or services that place the unit’s performance significantly above that of other units of similar composition and mission responsibility.

NC State commissioned 29 cadets during this period, including three distinguished graduates. The unit received an overall rating of “excellent” on a March 2001 headquarters inspection, and all its support programs have received ratings of “excellent” and “far exceeding standards.” The unit has been recognized with a “best practice” distinction for outstanding use of technology in its recruiting management system.

The unit has also been heavily involved in the community. Members of the unit helped coordinate Junior ROTC drill competitions around the state, hosted a 24-hour POW/MIA vigil and served on a board to evaluate NC State Merit Scholarship candidates. In 1999, the detachment assisted in the aftermath of Hurricane Floyd.
