History series on television features professor: Dr. S. Thomas Parker, history of professor, appears in the new A&E television series “The Foot Soldier: From Ancient Egypt to the Future.” He appeared on the Jan. 14 episode on Greek foot soldiers and will be featured on the Jan. 21 episode on Roman foot soldiers, which airs at 10 p.m. Parker’s research focus is Roman armies; he also rediscovered the lost Roman fortress of Aila in Jordan.

Women’s Center seeks volunteers: The NC State Women’s Center is recruiting for advocates to answer a 24-hour rape and sexual assault emergency line. The phones are portable; the training is brief and intense. Call the Women’s Center at 515-2012 for more information or for an application. The center will accept applications through Jan. 26.

Career planning workshop scheduled: This workshop is designed for adult students and alumni who want to change careers, decide on a curriculum or improve their current situation. Pre-registration is required at 2100 Pullen Hall or by calling 515-2396. There’s a $15 materials fee. All sessions will be held in the University Career Center, 2100 Pullen Hall. The Saturday workshops will be from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 31, Feb. 28 and March 28.

Shared Leave: Carina M. Muehl in CVM/VTH and Jennifer N. Bell in Student Development have been approved for participation in the Shared Leave Program. Those wishing to donate vacation leave should complete Form SL-2, Authorization to Donate Leave, and forward it to Employment and Salary Administration, Campus Box 7210. Continuing education classes available: Registration is open for “Sacred Sites and Mysterious Places of Great Britain” and “Complementary Medicines,” which are Division of Continuing Education Studies courses beginning this month. The “Sacred Sites” class meets Jan. 22 and 29 from 7 to 9 p.m.; the fee is $25. The “Complementary Medicines” class, about nontraditional medicines, will be offered six Tuesdays beginning Jan. 27; the fee is $45. Weight Watchers program offered: The “Weight Watchers at Work” program will begin a new 10-week series on Jan. 21 at a cost of $110. Postgraduate scholarship applications sought: The National Collegiate Athletic Association Postgraduate Scholarship and Internship programs have been established to increase opportunities for ethnic minorities and women in intercollegiate athletics. Applicants must be U.S. citizens at or near the beginning of their postgraduate studies, and who are planning to pursue a career in athletics administration or related field of intercollegiate athletics. Furniture center seeks proposals: The Furniture Manufacturing and Management Center in the College of Engineering is seeking research proposals from faculty at NC State and other North Carolina universities. Proposals will be accepted through April 15 with award notifications in late May. Funding will cover the period from July 1, 1998, through June 30, 1999. For information, contact Dr. C. Through industry sponsorship, the FMM Center supports research and technology transfer projects with the potential to improve the competitiveness of furniture manufacturers.

NASA fellowships available: NASA Graduate Student Researchers Fellowships are awarded for graduate study leading to research-based master’s or doctoral degrees in science, mathematics and engineering. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and may apply prior to receiving their baccalaureate degrees or at any time during their graduate work. Fine arts fellowship offered: The Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program is designed to assist students of superior ability to pursue graduate programs leading to the doctorate or master of fine arts in selected fields of the arts, humanities and social sciences. Eligibility is limited to U.S. citizens or permanent residents who at the time of application have not completed their first year of graduate study or will be entering graduate school in 1998-99.
