1) Graduate with an accumulated Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.25 or better, (2) Complete 15 hours of approved course credit, (3) Have at least a B- in all courses used to complete the 15 hours required for completion of the program, and (4) Receive a grade of "S" (satisfactory) for three semesters of Forum. |
| Question 2: |
How can I find out how many Scholars Forum events I have attended this semester? |
| Answer: |
You may now use WolfWare to view your events online at http://courses.ncsu.edu/hss110/. You may also call the USP Office [515-2353] or come by [102 Sullivan Hall] to find out how many events you have attended. |
| Question 3: |
I would like to make a suggestion for a future Scholars Forum event. Who should I contact? |
| Answer: |
Contact Ken Johnson, USP Assistant Director, at 513.2449 or ken_johnson@ncsu.edu. |
| Question 4: |
The registration date I received with my PIN from my advisor is different from the early registration date announced by the USP. Which date is correct? |
| Answer: |
As long as you meet the early registration requirements for the USP, then you will be able to register on the early registration date announced by the USP. |
| Question 5: |
I tried to register today and it says that I am not eligible – Why? |
| Answer: |
There could be several reasons why you are unable to register. Please call the USP Office at 515.2353 and a staff member will help you determine the problem. |
| Question 6: |
I can’t fit Scholars Forum into my schedule because I have a class conflict. What should I do? |
| Answer: |
If the class conflict is unavoidable, then you may sign up for Alternate Forum. Alternate Forum sign-up sessions are held during the first week of classes each semester. An email will be sent with the exact sign-up dates and times before the semester begins. By signing up for Alternate Forum, students agree to attend 12 optional forum events. For more information about Alternate Forum, please contact the USP Office at 515.2353. |
| Question 7: |
What types of courses can I take to complete my 15 credit hours of approved Scholars coursework? |
| Answer: |
The following types of courses may be used to complete this requirement: Honors sections (courses with an “H” suffix), Honors Contract courses, 500-Level (or higher) courses, First Year Inquiry (FYI) courses (courses with a “Q” suffix), and up to 6 credits of Study Abroad coursework. |
| Question 8: |
I completed an Honors Contract and the “H” isn’t showing up in my records – Why? |
| Answer: |
There are a few reasons why this may occur. It could be that the UHP Office has not received the grade report back from your instructor or it is possible that Registration and Records has not completed processing the paperwork for the "H" to appear (allow 1-2 weeks for the process to complete). Please contact the UHP Office (513.4078) to determine what step in the process your grade is currently at and what needs to be done next. |
| Question 9: |
What happens if my GPA falls below the 3.25 minimum? |
| Answer: |
Students in the University Scholars Program (USP) are required to maintain a GPA of at least 3.25. Students who have GPAs of less than 3.0 at the end of the first semester of their first year at the University are no longer eligible to participate in the program. Students with GPAs between 3.0 and 3.24 are eligible for a one-semester probation period during which they can work to raise their GPAs to 3.25. Students who are on probation retain access to all components of the program during the probation period. Students who have not established a GPA of at least 3.25 by the end of their first year at the University are no longer eligible to participate in the USP. Students who become ineligible for the program may reapply for admission once their GPA is above a 3.25. For more information about the probation policy, please contact Sean Cassidy, USP Associate Director, at 513.3984 or sean_cassidy@ncsu.edu. |
| Question 10: |
I am graduating this semester. What do I need to do to make sure that I receive recognition for completing the University Scholars Program? |
| Answer: |
You should complete the University Scholars Program Requirements Completion Form and return it to the USP office (102 Sullivan Hall) by mid-semester. Prompt completion of this form will help avoid confusion at a later date, and ensure that you are properly recognized at commencement.

| Question 1: |
I am an incoming freshman. How do I find out if I will be automatically invited to join the University Scholars Program or if I should apply? |
| Answer: |
Please contact Sean Cassidy, Associate Director, at 919.513.3984 to determine if you will be automatically invited or if you should apply. |
| Question 2: |
I will be participating in the University Scholars Program, but my preferred roommate will not. Can we still room together? |
| Answer: |
Yes, but keep in mind that housing assignments are made on a first-come, first-served basis, so you and your preferred roommate should submit your housing materials as soon as possible. This will help ensure that you will be housed in Sullivan Hall. |
| Question 3: |
I accepted my invitation to join the University Scholars Program – now what? |
| Answer: |
Congratulations and welcome to the USP! You’ve just joined a dynamic community of outstanding students. If you haven’t already, you should submit your housing materials as soon as possible. Although living in the Scholars Village in Sullivan Hall is not required, it is strongly encouraged.
Your first introduction to the University Scholars Program will occur during New Student Orientation this summer. The USP staff will host an important information session for all incoming Scholars and their parents at each Orientation session. You will receive a letter with further details about this information session prior to Orientation. Please contact the USP Office if you will be unable to attend any of the Orientation sessions, 919.515.2353. |
| Question 4: |
May I join the University Scholars Program after I’m at NC State? |
| Answer: |
Generally, first year students with a 3.5 cumulative grade point average (3.75 for students in CALS and Engineering) after the first semester are invited to join the USP. If you are interested in joining the USP after your first semester at NCSU, please contact Sean Cassidy, Associate Director, at 919.513.3984 for more information. |
| Question 5: |
I am planning to transfer to NC State and am interested in the University Scholars Program. Can I join, and if so, how? |
| Answer: |
The University Scholars Program is geared toward new freshmen, as they will have enough time at NC State to complete the requirements of the program and they are more likely to benefit from the residential component of the program. Transfer student applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Please contact Sean Cassidy, Associate Director, at 919.513.3984 if you would like more information. |
| Question 6: |
What are the costs associated with participating in the University Scholars Program? |
| Answer: |
There are no mandatory additional costs associated with participating in the University Scholars Program. All activities offered through the Scholars Forum Series are free-of-charge.
While the USP does sponsor some trips that have additional costs, these trips are completely optional and are subsidized by the USP to keep costs as low as possible. |
