“The Scholars Village deeply contributed to my experiences in the USP. My roommate and suitemates were all Scholars and we were able to attend events together. It was neat to always have a friend at events and be able to discuss the events when we got back ‘home’.”
Elizabeth Davis, '11, Accounting
“I lived in Sullivan my first year at NC State which gave me the opportunity to meet other students who were experiencing similar things and who had similar goals. The people I met living in the Scholars Village are still my friends today! Living with the USP allowed me to get involved with Scholars Council, my first leadership position at NC State. The Scholars Village was a very positive learning environment.”

- Be fully integrated into the University Scholars Program.
- Foster a community of academic excellence.
Life in the Scholars Village
The Scholars Village is located on Floors 2-4 of Sullivan Residence Hall and is limited to first year University Scholars. Every village resident will participate in a Village In Action (VIA) group with other students living on the same floor of the Village. Through the VIA program, village residents will take part in a series of specially-planned events that will allow them to interact closely with their peers, an upper class Scholars Village Assistant (SVA), and a professional staff member. This year, for example, VIA groups:
- enjoyed dinner at a local international restaurants;
- attended outstanding theatrical performances like NC Theatre's Little Shop of Horrors
- participated in pottery and wood turning classes at the NCSU Crafts Center;
- went canoeing on Lake Wheeler;
- participated in a high ropes challenge course;
- received priority sign-up privileges for various USP trips, including our annual Fall Break trip to New York City!
And that's just a few of our activities! Additionally, the SVAs and Resident Advisors (RAs) for the Village collaborate on special programming that complements the University Scholars Program and builds community. When we surveyed our current freshmen about their experiences in the Village so far, they repeatedly mentioned how much they enjoyed getting to know other Scholars in a casual and fun environment, how much they learned about other cultures and contemporary issues, and how it got them involved immediately in the NC State community. One freshmen summed it up best when she said: "I loved it! VIA and the Scholars Program was an excellent program for my first semester here at State. I feel that through this program I am more prepared for my next 3 years here at this University."
Frequently Asked Questions:
1) How do I apply to live in the Scholars Village?
After you have accepted our invitation to join the University Scholars Program, we will enter you as a University Scholar in the Student Information System. You must be entered as a University Scholar to be able to apply for the Scholars Village in your Housing Application. In the meantime, when you are filling out your Housing Application you can request Sullivan Hall as your first choice residence hall. [Please note, there can often be multiple weeks between when a student accepts the USP invitation, and when they are "coded" as a University Scholar, enabling them to apply for the Scholars Village. We will notify students once they are able to apply to the Village in the Housing application.]
Once a student is coded as a Scholar, they should go to the Living and Learning Village Applications link on the self service page of the Housing Application, and they will see the Scholars Village listed. They should click on the Apply button to go to the Scholars Village application. Students must select "I agree" at the bottom of the application to be approved for the Scholars Village.
2) How will Scholars Village housing assignments be made?
Assignments will be made based on the date the Housing application is submitted. Every effort will be made to honor students’ preference requests based on available space. Every village resident will be expected to participate in a Village In Action (VIA) group.
3) When should I apply for Housing?
As soon as you are accepted to NC State. You do not need to pay your deposit until May 1st, but you can and should apply for Housing prior to this date. If you decide to attend a different university or live off-campus, just contact University Housing to let them know to cancel your Housing Application.
4) Am I required to live in the Scholars Village?
While we encourage incoming University Scholars to live in the Scholars Village, it is not required.
5) Can I live in the Scholars Village if my preferred roommate is not in the University Scholars Program?
While only first year University Scholars can live in the Scholars Village, all University Scholars (and their preferred roommates) are encouraged and welcome to live in Sullivan Hall on Floors 5-12. While they will not be able to participate in the Village In Action program, they will have the benefit of living in close proximity to other University Scholars, the USP Office and many Scholars Forum activities.
