The Movement
The Movement is a trained group of male and female NCSU student activists and peer education leaders available to facilitate workshops on the prevention of sexual and relationship violence including stalking and cyberstalking.
Our Approach
Our approach to prevention is to change our culture to become a place in which all forms of interpersonal violence are not tolerated. Through encouraging all members of the NCSU community to speak up when they witness potential behaviors or comments that could lead to an act of sexual or relationship violence, The Movement believes that true change will occur.
Traditional prevention approaches focus on what women should do to prevent rape, i.e. self-defense programs, carry pepper spray and mace, and whistles. While there can be good messages that result from these interventions, none of these actually end rape from happening, particularly as 98% of perpetrators are men. Further, while 98% of perpetrators are men, on a typical college campus such as ours, about 93-94% of men DO NOT commit rape. The Movement encourages these men to speak out against this violence and be a part of the solution.
Imagine if…
- Each one of us stood up to every sexist joke…
- Each one of us intervened when we saw someone grabbing others that clearly did not want to be grabbed…
- Every time you saw that sketchy guy talking to a woman, you warned her about what kind of guy he really is…
- We had a campus in which all survivors of rape, sexual assault, relationship violence and stalking felt supported, believed, and encouraged to report what happened to them…
