Workshops Overview

Workshops are facilitated by The Movement Peer Educators. Most workshops are designed to be 1 hour and 15 minutes with no more than 30 students. This is because workshops are interactive and a very large group takes away from the learning experience. However, we would be happy to make accommodations if your group is larger than thirty students, or if you are under time constraints.  We can also tailor the workshops to fit the needs of your group, or to fit the demographics of your community (i.e. GLBTQQI, faith organizations, Greek Life, people of color, etc…) Use the Workshop Request Form below to let us know your needs.

Workshop Descriptions

Sexual Violence Prevention 101
Did you know that national statistics estimate as many as 490 NCSU women experience a rape or attempted rape every academic year and 90-95% of survivors know or are acquainted with the perpetrator?  This interactive program will educate students about sexual assault, the motivations for rape, and what resources are available for survivors on campus. It encourages students to think critically about our culture, and to feel motivated to do something about the serious issue of sexual violence.

Healthy Relationships
(Includes what it means to be in an unhealthy relationship where some form of abuse is occurring)
Can you believe that as many as 1 in 3 college couples are involved in at least one incident of violence during the course of their relationship? This interactive workshop is designed to get students thinking about what a healthy relationship looks like, and what may be potentially unhealthy or harmful in a relationship. Resources are also provided for students who may be in or know someone in an unhealthy relationship.

Stalking 101

One national phone survey of college students found that 13% of college women were stalked during one 6 to 9 month period, and of these 42% were stalked by a boyfriend or ex-boyfriend.  This workshop will educate students on what constitutes stalking, why it is harmful, and where help is available.

Viewing Tough Guise  (2 hour program: 1 and ½ hour video followed by 30 minute discussion).
The film examines the relationship between pop-cultural imagery and the social construction of masculine identities in the U.S.  Jackson Katz argues that widespread violence in American society needs to be understood as part of an ongoing crisis in masculinity.  Tough Guise utilizes racially diverse subject matter and examples that will enlighten and provoke students to evaluate their own participation in the culture of contemporary masculinity.  The Movement peer educators will end the movie with an interactive discussion.

Viewing Killing Us Softly – 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Jean Kilbourne provides an analysis of advertising’s portrayal of women. She decodes both print and television advertisements revealing the gender stereotypes within. Students will be challenged to consider the relationship between advertising and issues such as identity, sexism, culture and violence. The Movement Peer educators will end the movie with an interactive discussion.
