Behind the Veil
Blue Room, Talley Student Center
Rooted in both culture and Islamic religion, wearing a head scarf, or hijab, is a custom followed by many Muslim women. Join us as we explore what it means to wear a head scarf and why some women choose not to wear it. Non-Muslim women are invited to participate in a social experiment by wearing a head scarf for the day and observe their own and others' reactions, then join us for a great discussion about the experience.
This year, we will have a student panel, as well as a guest speaker. Our speaker this year is Dr. miriam cooke, a Duke University professor of modern Arabic literature and culture, will be speaking at the event. Her interests include ways in which women write in order to transgress and what some Muslim women have named Islamic feminism.
If you are a non-Muslim woman considering participation in the social experiment of wearing a head scarf, please read the "Veiling Information" document for more information about expectations and how to wear the scarf. Please feel free to print and share the flyer for this event.
Everyone is welcome to attend!
Co-sponsored by the NC State Women's Center and the Muslim Student Association.
