Alternative Spring Break Trip

The Women's Center is collaborating with the Center for Student Leadership, Ethics, and Public Service (CSLEPS) to offer an ASB trip with a focus on women and gender issues.  The trip location for Spring 2007 was Guatemala.  Alternative Spring Break is a unique service-learning program in which students engage in direct service to a community while being immersed in the culture and customs of that community. Throughout the week, team members participate in a variety of cultural, educational, recreational, and reflective activities to enhance their service experience.

Chocolate Festival

Our Annual Chocolate Festival has gained popularity every year since it began in 2004. This event was created to raise awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection as well as raise funds for the Women’s Center and breast cancer education. Attendees get to sample tasty chocolate treats from local bakeries and restaurants while walking through our breast cancer wellness fair and silent auction. The Chocolate Festival is held in early October and tickets typically go on sale in August. This event tends to sell out, so we suggest getting your tickets early!

Hoops for Hope

Join the Women’s Center, Alumni Association, Health Promotion and Parents & Families Association for our Annual Hoops for Hope Event. Hoops for Hope was created in February 2005 to raise awareness about cancer and support our Women’s Basketball Team. Over the last two years the event has focused on breast cancer education, and monies raised from the event are donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, NC Triangle Affiliate. Typically held in January or February, this event features a brunch with guest speakers, a silent auction, and a wellness fair. After brunch participants then cheer on our Women’s Basketball Team at what is now affectionately called the “pink & white game.”

Let's Knit

Back by popular demand, this informal group meets every Tuesday evening at 5:30pm. Beginners as well as experienced knitters are welcome.  Participants learn the basics of knitting as well as share tips and their projects with one another. The Women’s Center has a supply of yarn, patterns, and the instructor. Participants will need to bring their own pair of knitting needles – if you are a beginner, we recommend size US 8 short. For more information call the Women’s Center.

LGBTQ Coffee Talks

Coffee Talks meets each Thursday at 5:00 PM throughout each semester and offers social support and discussion in a group setting for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered students, students questioning their orientation, and their allies. This is a safe space to meet people, hang out, and discuss anything with your own peers. These talks are co-sponsored by LGBT Services, Women’s Center, and Counseling Center. For more information contact Richard Tyler at retyler@gw.ncsu.edu.

Self-Defense - NO LONGER OFFERED

The NC State Women’s Center made the decision to no longer offer self-defense workshops as part of our regular, on-going programming.  This decision was not made lightly or easily.  Our office’s intensified focus on education, prevention, and advocacy services around interpersonal violence (IPV – sexual assault, relationship violence, and stalking) has brought about a philosophical shift in our IPV work.  Acknowledging that approximately 90% of sexual assaults on college campuses are perpetrated by known acquaintances, we now take an approach to educate students that focuses on bystander intervention and culture change for sexual violence prevention.  Rather than placing the responsibility on potential victims of sexual assault and recognizing that self defense techniques are not as effective with non-stranger (versus stranger) assaults, we want to change the culture to one that no longer condones or supports a climate of gendered violence.  Our focus has turned to being proactive to stop sexual assaults before anyone is ever attacked and give attention to the responsibility that men and women have to actively and consistently engage in ending this violence so that we’re involving the entire community.  Contact the Women’s Center or members of The Movement if you would like to learn more or schedule a program on this topic.

Take Back the Night

The Women’s Center coordinates NC State’s Annual Take Back the Night. Celebrating its 20th Anniversary in October 2007, Take Back the Night is a march and rally to promote sexual assault awareness, prevention, and safety on our campus and in the community.  Without help from many co-sponsoring departments and organizations, this event would not be as successful. [Take Back the Night Sponsors] If you or your office would like to co-sponsor the 20th Anniversary of Take Back The Night, please contact our office.
