Molly Hays Glander Rape and Sexual Assault Response Line
In 1995 the Women’s Center, under the direction of Rhonda Craver, developed a program to create a centralized system to assist rape and sexual assault survivors and coordinate the University’s resources available to them. It was called the Advocates Program.
Telephone lines were set up to receive calls 24 hours a day in case someone needed assistance after being sexually assaulted. Volunteers went through training to learn how to respond to survivors that might call the response line and refer them to resources they may need.
In 1998, the Women’s Center renamed the Advocates Program in honor of the late Molly Hays Glander. Dr. Glander was an expert at crisis intervention and a true visionary in women’s issues. She was gifted in dealing with human sexuality, substance abuse, eating disorders, and relationship issues. At a time when there was no Women’s Center and less community awareness and support of women’s concerns, her genuine concern, insight, and awareness of rape and its implications were a true gift to the women of this campus.
Today, the program operates much the same. However, more and more calls are received from family and friends of survivors who are seeking information on assisting their loved one through the experience. The Woman Center offers two training sessions per year for the Molly Hays Glander Rape and Sexual Assault Response Line (one in the Fall and one in the Spring). Volunteers for the response line are often the first point of contact for survivors of rape and sexual assault and/or their family and friends. Those interested in volunteering for the response line must begin by completing an application.
Students, staff, and faculty at NC State University can reach the 24-hour Rape and Sexual Assault Response Line by calling 919-618-RAPE (7273). If you or the people whom you are calling about are not affiliated with NC State University, please contact your local rape crisis centr.
